The crew waves as the ship lifts from its berth in the field. The stalks bend back into place as the sails begin to fill. The captain is at the helm (sailing roll 7 before mods) and points the ship towards the nearest shore.
As they curve outward, avoiding the treetops by mere inches, the crew takes a few minutes to scan for trouble; they note the elven watchtowers here are empty as they pass, and offer no threat (best notice roll was 11).
Taz, having been informed of the happenings in the cave, suggests keeping the details of their task from the crew, at least for now. He suggests focusing on putting Tooly’s skull to rest, refitting, and then letting the crew know when they have a choice to stay with the vessel. He makes it clear his duty is to his comrades, and his old uniform trousers are freshly brushed when next you see him.
The ship is light by half of its medicine; the people of Jorvan refused to take more for their wood. They gave 3 bushels of cured bark, as well as rough hewn logs to fill the hold. They also replenished the stores, although with little in the way of alcohol, much to the chagrin of Medicus.
The Captain estimates six weeks until port with the current tailwinds. The Skies here are warm like a fireplace from across a room; Taz warms it’ll be hotter still before you arrive.
About a week into your journey, Blendin calls down to say that he has spotted three sets of sails, and what looks to be a small island. The ship sizes are hard to judge from this distance, as are their make; before you can get a clear identification, they are obscured by a fogbank; to your eye, this appears to be a standard steam fog rising and condensing from the warmer skies below, not one produced by the dreaded fogsharks more common to the higher climes.
The captain is off watch, currently snoring in his hammock; Xisco Blendin and Harmony are currently on duty, with Vuyen on the helm.

"Let's swing in a little closer and take a look," Xisco says.
ReplyDelete"Aye, but how about we wake the captain first."
ReplyDeleteHarmony purses her lips in doubt, but says, "I'll wake him." She steps quickly to the captain's cabin and knocks on the door (or jamb). "Captain Gardner, we've sighted three ships and an island, but there's fog, now. What would you like to do?"
ReplyDeleteOnce she's sure Gardner has awoken and is informed of the situation, she pops over to her bunk to get all her magical items, though she leaves her hammer where it is.
Xisco shrugs in agreement to Blendin's statement.
ReplyDeleteGardner takes 1 point of fatigue
ReplyDeleteThe captain awakes with a grumbling noise, and joins the crew as they break out of the mist cloud and can make out what is beyond (group notice check 7).
There is a small island, probably about an hours walk across. A few low structures can be seen amongst some sparse trees with large fronds at the tops.
two ships are anchored in the capture field: a skiff painted a vibrant green, and a lean skimmer with sails below the hull instead of above it. The captain, even in his wavering state, announces this design is popular at Atrium, where the locals embrace risk-taking.
A third ship, probably a small frigate, is making way from the island, heading up at a reasonably steep angle.
to clarify, the frigate does not appear to be on an intercept course.
ReplyDelete"Seems too small a place for so much trade," Harmony opines, "unless it's just a rendevous for ships that don't want to trade where the Trade Council can see." Her tone shows some doubt, as if willing to be corrected by anyone with knowledge she lacks.
ReplyDeleteOn a completely unrelated note...

ooc: Solid, super solid. Blendin gets a benny.
ReplyDeleteNice. Better than http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSt-3X-pK24 by far.
ReplyDeleteooc: what's the plan, gents?
ReplyDelete"Might be good to get a soil sample, find out what's what, in any case. Could be handy later?"
ReplyDelete"I suppose we would have the two little ships outgunned, so they won't start anything..." The small redhead sounds doubtful, but sees no reason to object to the idea.
ReplyDeleteI second going in for a soil sample. If it is an illicit trading place, it could be very useful. And we should have them outgunned. Hopefully.
Blendin will defer to the captain.

ooc: I just graduated from Law School!!!!!
ooc: Congrats on the big JD! But don't think your legal skills will help you with the rules around here!
ReplyDeleteVuyen brings the ship into the lee of the island, and winds calm in the sails as you pull into the capture field. There is no pier for real vessels here, only a small dock with a couple of tenders.
As you near the island, you see activity as a handful of men dart from one of the nearby buildings to the little canopied tender. They begin rowing out at a reasonable pace to meet your vessel. No sign of dangerous activity is noted from the green ship or the sub-sailer; just the friendly, watchful eyes of crewmen as the Olic begins to take in sail and make ready for anchor.
The tender arrives as Taz, Fairfield and Medicus join you on the gun deck from below. The captain has suggested he and the crew stay aboard to stow gear and secure for anchor. This has the added benefit that in the event of trouble, be ready to scour the shore or other ships with cannonfire. He looks at Blendin when he says he hopes that won't be necessary.
The tender captain is a human, as is one of the two rowers. The other is a dwarf, thick and brawny like most of his kind, but not wearing the usual metal you've come to expect. All three are adorned in some manner of scale armor hauberks, made from a glossy white/brown wood-like material. Each plate is about the size of a cog, a couple inches across, and layered to provide reasonable protection. The wooden clacking as they move about to come aboard is almost musically hollow.
"'o might you be, din? Name is Grainger, this is Melles, and the short 'un is Kimball." Despite his curt tone, coupled with lack of w’s and a general air of dimwittedness, they are all smiles. Their weapons, short stabbing swords made of a laquered bamboo in the case of the men, and for the dwarf a wooden axe with a bamboo haft and a 'blade' that uses the same woodlike material as his armor, are hanging almost unnoticed at their sides on toggles.
“’Ere are my manners, ‘elcome to Taraval!” Grainger tosses his chin at Melles, who pulls a flask from his side, a hollow gourd-like affair, and pulls a stopper out with his teeth. He spits it onto the deck, and takes a long pull from the gourd, before offering it to Xisco. Grainger speaks as this is occurring. “Coming ashore is free. Coming back costs a cog, and tip.” His grin at this reveals poorly maintained teeth to go along with his sense of humor. ”The first liter of ‘ater is free. Nut’s are 10 cogs for ripe, 5 just for the meat. Hour ‘ith a girl for a cog, ‘e have two now. Both at same time for 3 cogs. New one is right pretty, like that one.” He points at Harmony. “Also takin trade, as usual. Need services? ‘e have navigator, ‘e have courier. Have odds and ends, yeah? Atrium ship, bring goods just first ‘atch.”
The captain grants leave to Harmony to join the others on shore if she sees fit, in case there was a question.
ooc: When JWW is back in communication, he can feel free to flag a tender and arrive at any location the rest of the crew is at, or direct the captain somewhere else if he prefers.
OOC: Congrats, LR.
ReplyDeleteIn her red-and-black city clothes and her various metal jewelry, Harmony supposes she does look fairly fancy to the locals, but she idly wonders what the first girl looks like if the second is "right pretty" like her.
Aloud, she asks the locals if they have a good leatherworker who can refit her leather tunic for her, and what it might cost.
Still lacking hard currency of her own, Harmony asks the captain for some or all of her wages so as not to be stranded when she goes ashore. (Assuming he agrees and gives her some cogs,) she then boards the tender. If she expects to find someone to fit her armor, she'll bring it, but otherwise she's wearing only her city clothes and all her devices.
Barring other developments, once ashore she'll either look for the leatherworker or explore a bit, possibly looking for people or things to fix in trade for something.
"'e have a tailor, yes ma'am. He 'orks 'ith all materials, he do."
ReplyDeleteThe captain had supplied the crew with their monthly wages a day after leaving port, as is the usual custom to avoid desertion.
Harmony is led aboard the little tender by Kimball, who speaks to her in his dwarven tongue, then laughs a throaty laugh that makes his armor jangle and a knowing wink.
ooc: Harmony has 305 cogs in her possession by my tally.
In that case, she'll bring her "new" armor along, wrapped in cloth or in a bag so it's not obvious what it is. If any of her shipmates look curious about her brief exchange with the dwarf, she'll explain with a slight smile that he was offering her a friendly greeting and his hospitality.
ReplyDeleteHarmony will bring a reasonable number of cogs for the work (whatever she estimates that to be), plus a little extra, but the rest of her cash will remain aboard the Olic.
Xisco took a pull from the gourd, then passed it back.
ReplyDelete-------------
Xisco's going to explore the isle a bit, chat with the "natives", listen to gossip, and see what kind of games they like.
The liquid has a sweet, mild flavor, with a slight metallic tang. It leaves a film inside Xisco’s mouth that makes him feel less parched in these warm environs.
ReplyDeleteBlendin, Harmony and Xisco find themselves guided through a small town by Grainger and the rest. The outbuildings are assorted stonework common to the skies; bits and pieces scavenged and brought here for building materials. The town appears large enough for perhaps 50 permanent inhabitants. You are guided to the tailor, a orcish woman of middling years and a calm manner. She greets Harmony, takes her measurements then negotiates a price: she will keep the elven leather scraps that she removes taking in the overlarge armor (Harmony won with a raise.). The orcish tailor states the alternations will take a day, or two since he has little else on the dockit. She also offers to mend Xisco’s trousers, which have a ragged seam.
After they finish their business there, they continue into the center of town. Here, the small buildings are closely huddled around a central feature: a capsized frigate and a galleon laying on its side. Both vessels have long since been repurposed: new building has taken place in a hodgepodge manner, growing off the pair of central hulls into antechambers and support structures. The galleon is clearly identified as a drinking establishment and inn, the Lecherous Priest Tavern, and Melles indicates it is also a small indoor market.
The upended frigate appears to be the closest thing to a ‘state’ building in the town, the home of Taraval’s leader, and the site of the navigator’s office. Grainger leads you inside through a thick pair of woven fiber curtains, dyed green with natural hues. A rotund squat man, wearing a skirt of the same material as the curtain and a large necklace of cogs and other metal trinkets, greets you. He walks with a clear limp; scars from a severe burn lace his left side, and he is missing about half his left hand. “’elcome to my island! Aye, aren’t you a dashing lad and a dainty miss! Oh, and ‘ilding to boot!? Sorry, didn’t see you there; har har! They call me Gunny, though my cannon are long since spiked.” He whistles sharply, and a tall orc with heavily pierced face brings a tray from one of the side rooms, with a half dozen of the stoppered gourds. “So, ‘at brings you to me island? Trade? Needing of information are ya? Just a place to rest before getting on your ‘ay?” He hobbles constantly as he speaks, pacing back and forth with a decided stump-drag stump-drag gait.
Blendin steps forward, trying to make himself a bit taller as he speaks, "We are always looking for new locations to trade and gathering a little information here and there never hurt anyone. Well, not me anyway." A joking smile crosses Blendin's face.
ReplyDeleteGardner finishing overseeing the stowing of the gear and weighing anchor. He makes the appropriate log entries. He prepares a cargo manifest and gives it to Taz.
ReplyDelete"You and Medicus can go ashore. I think we all could use a break so we may stay for a few days. See if there is any interest in what we've got on board or any goods that catch your eye. Report possible trades to me or you and Xisco can do it if a deal need be made on the spot. Also collect a soil sample for me." He turns to the dejected looking Fairfield and the whining Fang, "Don't worry, you'll get your chance."
After Taz and Medicus has departed Gardner will turn to the boy's instruction. "Now let's see what you've learned about sailing..."
------------------------------
Sorry guys, been travelling for work and then having to catch up here. I'm going to be away again from Thursday through Sunday. So for now I'm going to stay on the ship. Whatever people want to do trade-wise or here is good with me.
"I see I see. Oh lil' master, I am surely glad you mean us no harm. trade is good. I 'as a skysailer as you are, before all this." he waves his hand at the ship around him. "mayhap I shall share the tale over drink, bit of business first."
ReplyDeleteGunny tells you that the island has two major exports: coconuts, the gourd you've been drinking from is one of these. its husk is used for fiber, the shell makes a reasonable armor and its flesh is edible. on top of that, it grows quickly in warm climes with minimal water. this commodity is unknown to you.
the other export is bamboo, which most of you are familiar with. he also mentions that the ships in port may have trade, but the.island doesn't oversee inter-ship trade. He indicates the usual imports are alcohol, cloth, and building materials.
He adds, "I should mention, since I 'ant no harm to come to the lass, that I have no truck 'ith the Council. Trade here is black, as they call it. But 'at is a few gifts between friends, uh?"
How is the quality of the Tailor's work (based on goods in the shop)? If the quality meets Xisco's high standards, not only will he agree to let her mend his pants, but he might want to pick up some other clothes.
ReplyDeleteHarmony smiles crookedly at Gunny, thinking she understands his implication. "Perhaps it would help avoid trouble to mention that the last men to give me trouble burned to death. I'd rather not hurt anyone, but I can take care of myself. As for the TC, perhaps they just figured that your island is too small to be worth the expense to oversee, thereby tacitly granting you free trade, eh?" She smiles more brightly, as if sharing a joke or perhaps even naively believing what she says.
ReplyDeleteWithout changing her expression, she adds, "Incidentally, I am a healer, should anyone need my services while I'm here."
Harmony doesn't have anything in particular to do while staying here, apart from getting her armor fitted. She'll pay to get ferried back to the ship to sleep, but will stay on the island during the day, healing anyone who needs it in exchange for "donations." She's a bit more emphatic about the donations than she was when working for Coyne on Shadowhaven, but she still doesn't demand payment before treating anyone. The rest of the time, she'll watch Xisco gamble, or explore the strange island. If anyone buys her food or drink, she'll let them sit with her and talk. She'll listen to any stories of the Void and skysailing with particular interest, and will tell the story of the orc pirates in return, leaving out exactly how she untangled the skysail from the rigging to avoid revealing too much about her abilities. She won't mention the events on Freedom Isle unless someone else on the crew brings it up.
ReplyDeleteNote that this is just if things need to jump ahead.
Xisco believes this is some of the very finest tailoring he’s seen demonstrated by an orc wearing a grass skirt. He chooses to wait on tailoring until he arrives in a more suitable (see what I did there, punny) locale.
ReplyDelete“Har Har HAR!” Gunny nudges the wildling in the shoulder, “She is quite the firebrand, yes? Don’t you ‘orry, lass, I know my place and have seen my share of flames!” He gestures at his scars, but seems a bit hurt at the implication that his island is ‘small’ and proceeds to give the three of you a tour of his ‘mansion.’ The capsized frigate was once a stately craft. You can see detailed working on the lattice between floors, joints that show careful craftsmanship He stops short of showing you the former hold, which he refers to as, “Me refuge” but goes about showing the gundeck – now given over to ‘state offices’ and ‘official quarters’ and such things. Largely, it appears empty and disused, far too large for a community this size.
Trade is settled in a rather quick manner over a handshake; Xisco offers to purchase a hogshead of fresh ‘Koh Koh nuts’ and the small tools he sees the orc servant using to open them. Gunny is a shrewd bargainer, and a price of 500 cogs is settled upon. Xisco also acquires a steamer trunk, which Gunny states is a priceless artifact, an original treasure chest from the Lecherous Priest, through a new dice game called ‘Crown and Anchor’ (although not before losing his tin picture frame and another 20 cogs). Xisco also picks up a set of these dice once he’s sure of the rules in exchange for his sap gloves.
Taz genuflects and kisses his windcharm when he hears where the trunk is from as Xisco shows of his winnings to the Captain. “Are you mad, Sah?! The Lecherous Priest is the ship of GlowMad Le Roche!” He reminds the rest of you (often, over the next few days) the tale of how the Priest was a doppleganger ship built into a galleon, estimated at 30 guns. It was said to have sunk ten years ago at the hand of Adm. Finius Stonemourn of the dwarven Council ship Durin’s Shield, although both ships were never heard from again, so no one is certain. Xisco informs the mate and captain that a galleon bearing that name is laying on its side in the center of town. The captain, having heard tales of La Roche and his gruesome ambush tactics throughout the Lower Reaches, investigates this ship, and sees that the figurehead matches its supposed description: a nude female figure over the knee of a laughing man in vestments of a songpriest, apparently in the process of being paddled.
Blendin watches intently as Xisco gambles, and often interjects to try and glean information from the locals. The most helpful voice is that of the Navigator, who muses that Ha’Lach is not too far removed from Hu’lac’m, an orcish word for ‘stronghold.’ Most of the orcs, of course, live in the far upper climes.
Harmony attempts to treat some of Gunny’s scars and old wounds but to no effect; the damage is quite old and unresponsive. He doesn’t mind telling her of how he received the wounds though, as way of payment for her attempt. He had been aboard his frigate the Chance Satisfaction, a lightly armed transport vessel moving barrels of hops between dwarven ports. Their lookout spotted the now famous battle between the Priest and Durin’s Shield. The frigate moved to support the Council Ship, in accordance with the Law of the Skies, but by the time they closed, the Priest had won and sunk the Shield. The frigate turned to run, but was overtaken by the Priest. The fight that ensued was a few hours due to heavy fog like that you saw when approaching the island. When it cleared, they found themselves over this island, and both fired a crippling salvo putting both ships beyond reasonable repair. The crew of both ships were forced to crashland and the survivors worked together to last the first few years. They found the edible Koh Koh nuts and the reasonable rains kept most of them alive. A few years later, when a trawler happened upon the island, the remaining crewmen of both vessels largely decided to stay and begin setting up a small trading post between the dwarven cities rather than return to sailing. He indicates that about a third of those remaining on the island were once cutthroats on the Priest, but the decade of island life had made them mild.

Okay...I know I read two long posts by BR here the other day. Blogger is eating posts retroactively, now?
ReplyDeleteO.o OMG!
ReplyDeleteSON OF A BITCH. it just ate my rehash of the posts!
ReplyDeleteokay, heres the skinny. status.blogger.com
ReplyDeleteit has details on their systemwide fuck-up. they're supposedly trying to get the comments back by the end of the weekend.
In lieu of waiting on them to get their thumb out of their ass, here's a critical issue recap.
Xisco gambled, won a steamer trunk from an infamous pirate ship which is also the galleon in the middle of town.
Xisco bought a personal stash of koh koh nuts.
Blendin investigated, and found out gral ha lach is kinda like an orcish word for stronghold. Orcs tend to live way up high in the skies.
Harmony tried to heal Gunny. No effect. He paid her with a story about how he came to be on the island. According to him, 10 years ago he was on the frigate (a hopps and barley trader) when it stumbled into the aftermath of a fight between the Lecherous Priest (the doppelganger galleon) and a Dwarven Council ship called Durin's Shield. Durin's shield was destroyed by the doppelganger (captained by the rather famous pirate GlowMad La Roche), which turned to fight the frigate. Since it was badly damaged by the fight with the Council ship, the battle went long, and both ships ended having to ditch onto this island. The remaining crews of both vessels worked together to survive; roughly a third of the island residents are former pirates and scallywags. When rescue finally arrived years later, the marooned crews decided to stay on their new island home and set up a little word-of-mouth black market trading post.
Gardner verified the pirate vessel based on its awesome figurehead and his knowledge of ships of the skies. He also got Taz and Medicus to handle replenishing of stocks.
Here's the deal, I'm not holding my breath for blogger to unshit itself. So I'm going to trust my players. If there is more you want to do here, go to it. Explore, start up a conversation with an existing or new NPC, or whatever you want. As long as its cool or tells us something neat about your character, its canon. I'll respond accordingly, and then we can move on to heading to mount ore.
Harmony's long red hair and quality, urban, feminine clothes attract a fair amount of attention from the rogue's gallery that makes up the island population. When word gets around that there's a new woman on the island, she finds her attempt to have a quiet evening watching Xisco gamble foiled instead by having to virtually hold court for a number of ex-sailors and pirates. The tavern is full, though not overcrowded. Many of the men seem to be going about their normal business--gaming, drinking, or eating, but Harmony can't look around the room without catching a few eyes watching her.
ReplyDeleteHuman and dwarven men stop by her table with offers of drinks, but whereas on Shadowhaven a man would send over a drink via the bartender, here the men as her if she would like something before ordering. Their offers seem to her eyes and ears to involve more commitment from her than they would in a pub on Shadowhaven. She declines them all, though she hesitates before mutely shaking her head at an offer from one dashing human with an eyepatch and style to rival Xisco's. Her face seems flushed despite her mild intake of alcohol, and she does not invite any of the locals to sit with her, and rarely says anything aloud to them, mostly nodding or shaking her head while clutching her glass or one of her trinkets.
To her surprise, the men seem to take orderly turns accosting her, and the few times two approach her at once, they glare but do not exchange blows or draw weapons--at least not inside. Even more surprising, none of them sit down without permission, or persist with their flirting after she refuses their offers. The semi-reformed pirates and black-market traders of this island seem in many ways more civilized than their counterparts would be on Shadowhaven.
When she mentions this to the bartender while getting her own refill, he explains that fights over women are punishable by death, here. The only way to keep sailors and pirates from killing one another over the few women was to make sure even the winners of such disputes would end up losing, and after a few examples were made, it turned out to be very effective. Harmony frowns at the mention of capital punishment, but has to admit that it seems to work in this case. She passes the evening alone save for the frequent refusals, but even those taper off as it gets later, though the tavern remains full and the locals continue to watch her as she drinks and pretends to watch the game at Xisco's table.
When it gets late, she pays for a ride back to the Olic and sleeps on board. The next day, she goes back to the island only long enough to pick up her finished armor before reboarding and waiting to depart. It fits her like a glove--indeed a bit more than she expected, the orcish tailor made it nearly form-fitting, including a slight dent between her breasts where her necklace hangs, which conveniently keeps it from swinging. She wears the armor with her black skirt and boots, and straps her black wool belt over it so she can tuck her healing pistol somewhere and pin her flame brooch to the fabric. She frequently admires the sleeves and adjusts the armor, as if equally proud and self-conscious.
Xisco would like to see more of Lecherous Priest. He is also curious to learn the fate of La Roche, and when he gains rapport with a local, will ask to that effect, as well as ask about the fate of the galleon's log book and soil collection.
ReplyDelete"Was his madness sudden? Did it occur over time? Where did they travel to?!? "
