Getting so close!

I wanted to take a moment to talk about how I plan to run this game – much of this is old hat for 3/5s of you, but hopefully it’ll be a useful refresher.

In pbp, it’s necessary to give players a lot of control to keep things moving. You guys have done a great job so far with your aspect generating stories and planets. This system wants you to narrate your action – how you narrate it, and what skill you mean to test, will have a bearing on the target numbers, so go for it. Also feel free to describe things in the scene. I’m going to give a glimpse, but as a practical matter it’s not a limit to what’s there in the scene. If you’re in an alley, and you think you would like to escape through a sewer grate, but I didn’t say anything about a sewer grate, I have NO problem with you adding one to the scene. It’s reasonable, and sewers are fun. In most cases, just do this – don’t ask, don’t worry about it. We will make it work. Now, if you want to say that, instead of a sewer grate, you find a set of hovercar keys, that’d also be fine, but would cost you a FATE point.

Basically, don’t be afraid to add to the narrative.

The other thing I’ll say is that I will not be balancing combats for tough but winnable fights. Some fights you can handle, many you can not. You’re a combat heavy crew, but your 5 guys. This is a game world with a standing police force numbering in the hundreds of millions. I expect you to do well in a fight, probably win most little scuffs. But if I send a couple platoons of space marines intent on killing you, don’t expect them to be hobbled for your characters to beat. Sometimes running or surrender will be the better options. I’m not going to summarily execute you – most the time.

Last thing is I’m big on the dice. I expect you use them, and work with what you get. I’d prefer if everyone rolls their own dice. Remember that the way a typical action goes is:

Step 1: You state the skill you wish to test, and narrate the attempt

Step 2: I respond with target number, and/or suggest a second action and target number, with any relevant changes with your proposed action

Step 3: You roll, and resolve the action, narrating what occurs and maybe even move directly to your next action.

This keeps turn around basically at one exchange with me. In combat, there may be some extra work necessary to determine whether someone is down or not – but you’ll have full access to the character sheet, so you can probably guess.

I’d prefer if everyone gets along. That said, it’s not impossible that you might decide to compel one of your companions. This is a good thing. Remember, compels are agreements – and allow an exchange of FATE points. Don’t be bashful about it, and don’t get bent out of shape if your aspects work ‘against’ your character.

Time duration can be an issue in pbp, especially if you split up. If one of you goes to buy something, and the other gets in a fist fight, the fight might last 10 mins of game time, but take a week to resolve, where haggling might take a couple hours and resolve inside 5 posts. For these reasons, I generally try to keep the party in one place, but when it does split up, I either accelerate the slow thread, or decelerate the fast one. The other thing that helps a lot is if the crew that is on the fast thread can keep themselves busy. In character conversations can buy enough time to resolve the other thread.

More generally, if things slow in the game, I will push it forward. This has worked pretty well, but there’s the possibility I’ll step on some of your plans. Try to work them in, or feel free to say, hey, before X, I did Y. We can fit that in at the same time as we get the rest of the game moving again.

Wiki (Cortex) updates are going to be a big part of tracking play, and I expect everyone to participate. In addition, ANN and Waves will play a roll. I’ll update this reasonably regularly during play, particularly as we move into the more sandbox portions of the game. Your character might catch a news story that sounds like an opportunity, or you might get a Wave from an old friend looking for some help. I see these as metaplot devices for me to use, and generally would prefer to do most of the modifying here. If you want to use Waves to contact a npc, just do that in the game thread.

For now, I still don’t have a better solution than blogger. I like the phone flexibility, and it seems many of you do as well. As a rule, I would use a WP program to write things up, and then drop it on the site – blogger shits itself too often to lose your posts to it. I’m still looking at tumblr, but for now, I’m thinking blogger.

Oh, and here ya go terry

Caesar Zapata (Terry)
1) Why did you roll the grenade under the hovercar?
2) You left your crow’s nest before they left the grounds. Why?
3) Why did you suggest the secondary egress route instead of following ‘the plan’?
4) How many Alliance troop carriers did you say you saw landing?
5) Why do you have misgivings about this job?

  1. Has Ariel actually been done? I notice it has a description, but I would like to expound on it.

    Additionally, I've uploaded an image of the shuttle that MacHale's been using. Its a bit larger than the Firefly shuttles, in fact I think its based off the ship at the beginning of Serenity. Anyhow, it makes more sense for Doc's purposes as it strikes me as an RV more than a truck, which is more or less perfect for how Doc was using it.

    I'm going to flesh out the description this evening, but I did put the stats up.

    I also want to photoshop the deck layout to show MacHale's clinic and apartment as he's had it modified.

  2. Excellent. Ariel is ready for you to build as you see fit. I just uploaded basic canon info for each world that had some. If you don't see stats, its open for terraforming.

  3. Oh, couple more points;

    We use “ooc:” tags a lot to help keep track of character vs. player discussion. I often will also use italics to denote out of character information (dice rolls, questions for the player, spending of fate points, and so forth). This is a good convention and makes tracking a long series of posts easier; I’d like to continue to use it.

    Also, this is an intent heavy system. If you say, “I want to shoot him in the face and kill him using my slug throwing skill.” And then narrate the action “I draw my revolver, drop to one knee as he tries to scramble for the door, and fire two shots at head level.” outside of a combat, I have a few choices:

    1) I could start a combat, with your action being the first action. This is likely if there are others who would respond to your action, like say henchmen.
    2) I allow a roll against a target. I set the target (it might be a selected number, or it might be an opposed test – say in this case vs. his agility), and respond with a few details. “Well, he saw that coming, so he’s moving pretty fast, and you see him grabbing at his thigh for his own piece, and are a bit distracted. I’d say that’s a opposed by his agility. He rolled a 4 after mods.” Now, in this case, if you roll, and beat the target, what you said you want to do happens. In this case, you shoot him in the face and kill him. Now, it doesn’t really apply in this example, but remember that I could also set a secondary roll option in some cases, or replace your first test with a second that I believe is more appropriate.
    3) I can say “sure, that happens.” BLAM. You shoot him in the face and kill him. No roll required. This type of resolution will happen when it makes good sense that this a cool way to resolve the scene, or as often as not a way to get you into a lot of trouble. Now, this may be followed by consequences, like, “oh, and now the alarms are blatting, and you hear footsteps pounding in the stairwell. Prepare to enter combat, map uploading shortly.” But you knew that would happen, right?
    And remember, spend your fate after you roll to tag and invoke, but before if you want to compel. Say this guy you want dead has the aspect, “tunnel vision.” You might try and compel that, to force the third option up there in your first post: “Hey, I want to shoot him in the face and kill him. I don’t think he’ll notice when I draw my revolver, drop to one knee and fire two shots at head level, at least not before it’s too late, due to his ‘tunnel vision.’ Here’s a FATE point that agrees with that assessment; otherwise I’ll test slug throwers.” If I agree, that gives you option three. FATE points define the gameworld – if I take the agreement, its on your terms. I’m not going to haggle a lot on fate point compels – either its as you say, or ‘no, here’s a point for you.’

  4. Last thought for a bit, I promise.

    Let’s say you test the above case (#2) and miss. What happens then? Feel free to narrate that. “I fire the two shots, they whiz by his head and he makes it out the door.” Or “The two shots fly past him, and he drops to the ground and starts begging for his life” or “The gun recoil takes the second shot high after the first one tears a hole in his frilly collar missing his neck by a razor’s breadth. He draws his own piece and points it at us, shaking like a leaf” Any of these are fine conclusions I would accept. You’ll have his aspects to go with, too, to help decide what’s a likely action. If you have him do something outlandish, I’ll charge you a point, or if necessary retcon – but I imagine that’ll be a rarity. The other thing you can do here is start setting up your next action, or you can let one of your companions come up with a plan…

  6. === On Her Own ===

    The stay on Meadow had been blessedly short. If it hadn't been for Dr. Ti-64, it could have been a permanent stay in a Browncoat detention center. But, thanks to 64's quick talking, if you can call it that, the browncoats realized the assistance Becky had provided and after a week of questions without any substantial answers, ["George Washington"] finally let her leave the compound with 64.

    In transport to meeting up with a friend of 64, Pandora was born. The cortex was a universe all its own, and Becky quickly explored it to the greatest extent any man has explored the cortex. Her electronic warfare training came in handy as she traversed the net and dodged the sloppy security of individuals and corporations alike. It was this cortex surfing that earned her the name Pandora. She had an uncanny ability to find a weakness in digital defenses and exploit them from the inside out. Pandora's most noteworthy accomplishment was the hacking of a Blue Sun subsidiary and the subsequent release of information that supported allegations that Blue Sun had been helping both sides throughout the Unification War.

    By the time Becky met Caesar, Pandora had been born and had a waiting list of clients. Strapped for cash due to her recent abandonment of the Alliance, Becky couldn't complain. She took the private security jobs that she could get and made a comfortable living while continuing to bolster her alias. Employers knew Becky as Pandora's muscle and as little else. It wasn't until she met Carlton for the second time that Becky found herself in a semi-permanent employment situation.

  13. Ariel is fleshed out (I will add more later as time allows).

    I also took the liberty to adjust Doc's Growing Up and changed an aspect.

    I dropped "Quit your whining, I got this" in favor of "Can you smell what the Doc is cooking?"

    It will make sense. I promise.

    I'm likely to flesh out a rim world in the next 24 hours.

    Also, the Morgan XL has been updated.

    I ran across an awesome Firefly Serenity wikia site. I did my best not to straight up copy what they had, but man someone there loooooves the core worlds.

    http://firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

    This may well be the best resource I found outside of the Serenity book.

  14. Ken: I'd like to suggest a minor modification to your aspect.

  15. Edited the Light Combat Suit. I decided to keep it as is and add Transfer Aspect: Radio to it, as my original build was 1 bp short. I also made a military space suit of sorts, in addition to Becky's SAS gear. It wouldn't make sense for Caesar to start out with the space suit, but it might be something he's interested in obtaining eventually.

  19. Will try to get a planet posted later tonight. Updated Tadhg's character sheet:

    Knockaround Guy -> Mmmm, clean, recycled air
    Unorthodox Modifications -> Absent-minded multitasker
    Daunting Presence -> Unorthodox Modifications (Gear Spin)

    Let me know if you have any suggestions, objections, or attaboys.

  20. Hey LR, I was just browsing your character page. Is there a way you could lower the resolution of the images? Or maybe leave one up top and stick the rest at the bottom of the bio page. They take up a ton of real estate on my browser.

    And, not that this has anything to do with anything, I hate Kari Byron with a passion generally reserved for Bears. All she does is paint stuff and look pretty on the show. That said, she does those two things very well.

  21. you can thumbnail those images, that'd help a bit.
