The Skies thus Far…

When last we left the intrepid crew of the Olic Haversham, they had made there way to the isle of Freedom, as misnamed as any place in the skies. Under the watchful eye of the elves, the glowborn toil in veiled slavery. The crew had landed their vessel for trade and refit following a chance encounter with orcish raiders, common in these skies looking to unload their troublesome goblins and pick up fresh rowers where they can be found.

Rather than risk dealing with the elves, given their previous encounters and the questionable safety of Master Gunner Blendin, the crew took a risky flight inland, landing among a friendly tribe of human farmers in the village of old Jorvan. As the original inhabitants of Freedom, they live a meager life under the rule of their Reeve, growing food in the verdant elven soil, imported at great cost over the past few decades, while tending the native trees and plants of this island, some of which having unique properties the crew is only beginning to discover.

No sooner had they introduced themselves than a band of maddened goblins invaders struck the town in force, with oaken giants and fearsome ragers. The crew was able to defend the town with few losses, and the goblins broke into the hill country they call their home.

The crew was given citizenship in the village, a great honor to be asked to join this cloistered people, and were so moved they chose to look into the goblin problem. The shareholders traveled overland, led by a farmer and a strange wizard who draws his power from the Void itself, to the goblin lair, while Taz and the paid crew stayed to make repairs for departure from this island.

Arriving at the goblin lair, they found it surrounded by mostly barren soil, trampled by the feet of dozens of goblins over the years. Cut rock from the digging marred the ground and treestumps made for treacherous traveling. The farmer Alfons, the young mate fairfield, and the Orange Wizard all decided to watch the main entrance to the cave, while the rest ventured within though a small side entrance hidden up the rock face.

The goblin hovel looked to have been peaceful until recently, but something had changed the goblins, causing them to kill their own children in the crib and abandon their crude but careful work. A foul stench below them indicated the main warren was in no better shape. Xisco, the apprentice wizard, chose to peer beyond the veil, and look for forces unknown. He was abruptly faced with a terrifying yet familiar purple glow, like those first witnessed on the mysterious island many months before. The glow formed a figure, distorted and unfocused, and peered back at him. He and the crew then heard the thunder of goblin footfalls, as the army below them awakened to their presence.

The crew bursts out into the Voidlight, carefully skirting the rockfall trap they disabled on entering the cave, and are now overlooking the surrounding countryside. Behind them, they hear the footfalls of goblins, but this is not what gains their immediate attention.

Over a score of goblins are pouring from the entrance below and to their left like bloodflies from a nest. They are armed with crude weapons, largely naked, and clearly in poor health even by goblin standards, but enraged beyond reason. The crew spies no ragers or other larger threats, but the flow does not appear to be staunched. The goblins seem directionless and unaware of either the crew or their allies hiding in a copse of trees a few hundred meters from the cave entrance.

ooc: welcome back crew. I hope that you’re feeling as rejuvenated as I am to play. Game on. Oh, renewing bennies. Blendin and Harmony gain an extra for their prompty posts in the last thread. square grid references are on the order of 20 m, not a battlemap.

  1. Harmony stares wide-eyed at the goblin horde pouring from the main entrance. She glances at her companions, ready to restrain any of them if they semm about to do something foolish like attack. She can only hope the trio in the copse of trees remains hidden. She hunkers down against a rock, only her eyes and her hat showing to any goblins that might look back. "Well..." she mutters loudly enough for the men to hear, "at least we'll be able to get to the source of the problem when they're gone?" She ends on a rising note to indicate that she is unsure what the source is, though it's clear that Xisco saw it somehow and the others are familiar with it. She briefly wonders who exactly it is she's signed on with, though if they're hunting down things that cause massacres like the one she saw inside, she can't say she's unhappy with her decision.

Glad you're back and decided to celebrate by throwing a goblin army at us. We were in a cave, you could have just used falling rocks to kill us all off.

But seriously, nice to be playing again.

  2. "Hopefully the horde will pass us and the others by. I'm more worried about what's behind us. Do you think the trap will block the passage? Will it alert the main horde?" Gardner crouches behind a rock and signals to Fang to be quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  3. her engineering intuition says that the goblin rock trap would likely make quite a racket. the horde appears to be growing, and heading out in an ever broadening fan away from the cave entrance.

    ReplyDelete
  4. "That trap would wake a dead man," Harmony says. "Especially down in the tunnels. Probably one reason it's there. I thought that--" she gestures to the ever-growing mob of maddened goblins flooding the landscape--"was what was behind us. You think there's something else?" She looks at all three of her companions. "You all seem to know what we're facing. What is it?"

    ReplyDelete
  5. you can hear footfalls in the tunnel behind you growing louder. harmony can see shadows moving quickly up the dimly lit stair. the captains fears that there are enemies before and behind appear verified.

  6. Any estimate on numbers coming through our exit? If it's only a few, might be best to jump them and knock them out. For now I'm assuming it's another horde, retcon if that's totally wrong.

Harmony hears the coming mob and for an instant freezes like a startled rabbit--but only for an instant. "Quick, up above the entrance!" She suits her actions to her words and begins scrabbling up the hill to the left, trying to get above and out of sight of the trapped exit while staying somewhat covered from the horde pouring out the other way by the curve of the hill.

If a climbing roll is needed, BR can make it for me. I may benny if necessary, depending.

  7. Also, if we all end up above the trapped exit, Harmony will try to make sure no one is atop the part that would collapse.

  8. the crew follows the little woman as she scrambles up the rock face. they find a decent ridge about 5 meters up the rock face and bunker down. harmony estimates at least ten goblins in the passage below them, but has no basis on which to estimate their total numbers. fang whines with worry at his masters side, as they look down on the growing horde now numbering at least 3 score, and surging outward towards the coast, not toward old jorvan.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Harmony puts in her new hat, forgotten until then on its neck strap. She pulls the rim down to block as much Glow as possible, since the goblins she's watching are all below. She watches the copse of trees hiding the villagers and Fairfield worriedly, glancing down to where the second group of goblins might emerge at any moment and attack. Her left hand covers the metal brooch shaped like a wall of fire pinned to her tunic.

  10. the horde is moving coastward, and is beginning to trickle out of the cave exit. the crew guesses some ten score left through their before sweeping outward. there is no sign the friends hiding in the copse of trees were spotted. a smaller band of twenty or so goblins is now descending the slope in front of you, but appears to be more observant than their kin. they scan the stumps and rock cuttings for, you presume, intruders. you get the distinct impression that leftbto their own devices they will find either you or your companions before long.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Blendin takes a scan of the landscape, looking for a place to hide. His skin instinctively begins to turn the grey of stone as he searches for protection. "Damn, I wish I had a way to silence this rifle."

    ReplyDelete
  12. Harmony has been watching the goblins with pursed lips, worried about the trio hiding below. As Blendin speaks, she looks at him incredulously. "Why not just use a crossbow?" She shakes her head, annoyed at getting sidetracked. "It would lure them away from the others, at least. Hey!" She brightens. "I could maybe lure them off and disappear. They could spend hours hunting for me out there after I doubled back here. Then we could all go down and deal with whatever it is."

    ReplyDelete
  13. so is this the plan? what ate the rest of.you going to do while she tries to draw off the attack?

    ReplyDelete
  14. "Find me a crossbow that can fire as far and accurate as this," Blendin indicates his rifle, "and I will use it. As for you acting as bait... sounds good to me." If the route looks clear, Blendin will suggest making their way to the friendlies hiding in the bushes and hole up till its clear.

  15. Sorry everybody, had to make an unexpected work trip and I forgot to let you guys know. I'm back now.

"I agree, if we can get rid of them this would be a good opportunity to deal with the demon. I don't have a better idea than Harmony unless we want to try to fight them. Blendin and I can probably take several of them before they close. Otherwise we'll try to hide while you lure them away, then we can go find the others and all go down below. Not sure how useful the Orange Man's powers will be down there, though."

    ReplyDelete
  16. "Maybe the Orange Man can watch the entrance for us." Harmony takes a breath. "Okay, I'll draw them off and lose them and come back here." She starts to climb down.

Without going to combat rounds, it's hard to be specific, but the plan is this:

Harmony will try to sneak towards cover, preferably the woods. Once she's close, she'll remove her hat to be more visible, and make some noise, like smacking rocks together or breaking a twig. When the goblins see her, she'll sprint for cover. Once out of sight, she'll trigger her headband and vanish, sneaking away and doubling back to the cave. Hopefully, the goblins will assume she's hiding among the trees and fan out to search for her.

If she gets enough distance on the goblins, she'll leave some strands of hair on a branch or two to throw them off longer.

If the goblins spot her too soon or if they're faster than she expects, she'll use a flame wall to slow them down while she gets to cover. If things go worse than that, I expect we'll go into combat rounds.

She'll try to conserve power on her headband, so she'll deactivate it as soon as she thinks she's lost them, concealing her hair under her hat, but she'd rather use it all up than get spotted, so she'll only turn it off if the goblins are all out of sight. She also has no qualms about knocking one or two out if they stay behind while the others are looking for her.

Welcome back, everyone, though Sam still seems to be MIA.

  17. OOC Note: Harmony's plan could result in the goblins coming back while we're still in the tunnels. Harmony is willing to take the risk to minimize killing, but I thought I'd point it out.

  19. The small redhead picks her way down the rocky trail, slip-sliding in loose gravel as she goes. The remainder of the crew watches her descent with a sense of unease; her eagerness to help her friends does not seem well balanced to her stealth, but for now, the goblins seem distracted by some small mammal they found burrowed in some nearby rocks.

Harmony reaches the bottom of the rockface, and moves to pick up some rocks to throw as a distraction. Unfortunately, she pulls the keystone of the pile, and it clatters with an incredible racket. The dozen or so goblins nearest her hear the sound, and come charging. She takes a moment to appraise the situation, and then bolts for a stand of trees some way off, away from the crew hiding near the cave entrance and her friends hiding in the bushes.

She is able to keep pace, running quickly through the stumps leading away, and the goblins are not closing to quickly. When she hits the treeline, she pulls up her hat, and touches her hairpin. Steam burns her fingers, but she tries again and feels the world around her dim as though in a haze (I spent 3 of your bennies to get that stupid thing to activate and not break. You have a penchant for rolling 1s on your weird science die. Hope you don’t mind). She moves as silently as she can muster, hiding under a nearby rock, waiting for the goblins to pass her by.

Tense minutes pass, waiting in silence. Once she is sure they have gone, she picks herself up, and starts heading back to the cave entrance. She turns off her hairpin as she approaches walking carefully up the rocks. She seems oblivious to the two goblins who were onto her scent, and burst from the trees behind her now.

The crew above sees the pair of greenskins break from the trees some 20 yards behind her after she materializes from the air near the bottom of the slope some forty yards below. They are running with murderous intent towards the unawares woman. You see no evidence of other goblins in the trees; it appears most of them have gone forward in their search.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Don't mind spending the bennies at all in that case. Being visible would have been bad. I guess since Harmony's oblivious, she'll just keep climbing up for now...

How many power points did she burn (or how many are left on that device) for future reference?

  21. (What is the range from Blendins location?) As long as it is not an absurd distance and impossible to make:

Blendin drops to a knee (unless that counts as movement), peers through the voidglass scope and fires a shot at the closest Goblin.

Shooting: 11 (spent 2 bennies) [I can't remember all of the modifiers (and their worth) that I have to take into consideration: marksman, voidscope, anything else?)

  22. Xisco waves at Harmony to hurry up, pantomiming that there are bloodthirsty goblins behind her. At least that's what he thinks he's communicating.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Gardner will take aim at the other goblin with his crossbow, waiting for it to get closer. When Harmony reaches the cliff face he will whistle to get the goblin's attention then shoot.
    -------------
    Taunt 5 (5 + 2 strong-willed - 2 MAP (assuming taunt is same turn as aiming))
    Shooting 13 (15 + 2 aim - 4 long range)
    Damage 8 (2d4 + 1d6)
    spent 1 benny

    ReplyDelete
  24. If Harmony notices the two people aiming and the third gesticulating wildly in time, she'll glance back, and upon seeing only two goblins, she will try to tell the others not to shoot, hoping both to prevent unnecessary deaths and the other goblins from hearing the shots.

If she's successful...I think I'd need combat rounds to determine what to do. I have many, many ideas, but no sense typing them all out if people start shooting.

Incidentally, one of your guys in arm's reach MIGHT wanna stop the wildling from alerting every goblin for a mile of our location. Just a thought.

  27. Harmony has just enough time to realize that Xisco’s hand waving means there is danger behind her. As she turns to look, she hears the report from Blendin’s rifled musket, echoing down the cliff face and sending a flock of skylers scattering in a black cloud of cawing out of a distant stand of trees. The ball buzzes past her ear like a bloodfly, finding a goblin still ten meters behind her. His head disappears in a shower of dark blood and white bone (19 damage dead gobby). The second goblin has time to skitter in his tracks. The captains’ whistle draws the goblin’s gaze upward and the bolt is just moments behind, finding a home in his chest. He staggers and claws to remove the insubstantial bolt before collapsing in a heap.

There is no sign of your friends in the trees; you hope they have just gone to ground, waiting out the danger.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Harmony scrambles up the slope, muttering loudly about bloodthirsty monsters. "Great, now what?" she demands of the others when she's close enough to not have to yell.

    ReplyDelete
  29. fang trots down to meet the small woman with a sniffing when she approaches her companions. Blendin scans the treeline with his voidlens scope looking for immediate danger; nothing yet. Xisco sees fairfield give a wave from the treeline, indicating he and the others are still safe in their hiding spot, before disappearing back into the little stand of trees.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "Maybe the echoing will help mask the location. Let's go talk to the others." Gardner moves to extricate himself from his perch and walks over to where Fairfield and the others are. He explains the situation and that they think some kind of evil creature is inside the cave stirring up the goblins. He proposes that Fairfield and the farmer return to the village to warn them of the horde and that the rest of them go below to deal with the creature in hopes that killing it will quell the horde. He asks the Orange Man if his powers will be helpful underground and if he wants to come. Any other thoughts?

  31. Blendin ignores Harmony's tone as he reloads his rifle.

    "Sounds go to me boss."

  32. Harmony sighs but stops glaring at the wildling and captain, and pats Fang on the head as he sniffs her. She moves over to Xisco (or follows him if he goes somewhere) and asks in a low voice, "So...what is it we're trying to destroy? A demon? Liche? You seem to have faced these things before..."

    ReplyDelete
  33. "Well, it's kind of hard to explain..."
    --------
Let's make that a Knowledge (Lore) check to see if there's some story that's even remotely similar
    --------
If the analogous story isn't sufficient (or just confuses Harmony, possibly because it isn't all that analogous), Xisco will start from the beginning and tell their story. With many asides and tangents ("I really liked that jacket, it was a gift from..."). And the occasional (which is to say, regular) forgetting of a lady's name, until he's well into the next part, causing him to go back and correct other details he got wrong in the previous portions. This will likely take days.

  34. ooc: Sam, why do you take benny granting edges? You'll never need them. Benny granted to Xisco, bringing his total to somewhere in the mid triple digits, I'm sure, for reminding me of the way in which I destroyed his favorite jacket.

Feel free to keep talking amongst yourselves, i'll post tonight.

  35. Xisco’s tale (sam may embellish and rework bits as he sees fit, of course. Include roughly 50x more references to women): “They say, long ago, that the world existed as one large island, floating in a bowl of water. Now, much debate over the years has centered over what the water was resting in, and Alturnicus of Spire is noted for having suggested a rather heretical view: a massive ship, The Ark, which held it all and was manned by a crew of the gods, before the mistress of the winds shattered… oh, sorry, where was I? Yes, one island, all peoples upon it, each building upon massive fortresses and cities in fear of the others. The dragonkin, as they were known then, were gifted wizards, much as they are now. One of my best professors was a drakin, and a drunk, and a bit of a womanizer. Which I won’t stand for. I hate the idea of woman being objectified.

“Yes, fortresses. The largest drakin fortress was a nine-tiered tower of stone called Kw’ant. No, more emphasis on the wha sound. Yes, more like that. In the centermost tier, the wizard-kings wove tapestries that guided the future events of their nation or alternatively performed blood sacrifices of the to their dragon ‘gods.’ Two opinions on the subject; really no one is sure. But some evidence from the dwarven lands suggests that the drakin tried to do away with this practice. The sacrifice thing. The weaving, well, I had a drakin tailor once try to fix my cuff after a scuffle with an angry older brother. That was the last time, let me tell you. Tailor, not brother; that happens a lot, actually.

“Anyway, they say the dragon gods punished the drakin, slaying their kings, and all the kings children to pay the sacrifice, and took the through as god-kings. Which is quite a few, children I mean; drakin’s lay eggs in clutches of a dozen or so at a time, and are quite promiscuous as a people. No ones sure about dragons. But a drakin sorcerer, oh what was his name… don’t recall. He consorted with a demon, and fought the dragon rulers thinking he could control the beast within him while displacing the dragons from their thrones. And while he drove out the dragon-kings… that was when they grew wings, to flee from the drakin-demon-sorceror. After this wizard demon fellow drove them off, they hatched the kings final egg. It had been saved, you see, for just such a contingency. It was hatched, but the demon took control of the sorcerer, and ate the drakin-spawn. Now, in their culture of the time, eating something made it part of you, so the demon-sorcerer became their rightful king. With the dragon’s fleeing, the lived under the rule of the sorceror for many ages, and became enemies of all other peoples, except for the orcs oddly. They were bad decision makers back then. Still are, I love it when they try to play cards though.

“But yes, it seems the drakin slew the demon many years later, when another child of the king’s eggs was born. An egg stored in a vault under the water sea I mentioned earlier. And he bound the demon king in the stone of Kw’ant, sealed by the fire of their returned dragon gods. Yes they returned to help, it’d been a long time.

“Now what’s really quite odd is that the dwarves have much the same story, except it’s a buxom demon lady who takes over a giant monster of stone, and the blood sacrifice was actually some sexual ritual involving a drug found in the moss of deep delvings…

“So anyway, a few months back, we found this island, with a ruined drakin keep…”

  36. The captain finds fairfield grinning ear to ear. “They’re after the elves, according to Alfons.” The farmer nods, coming out from under the shade of some carefully shielding branches. “yessir. The coast for sure. Big settlement their, I imagine they won’t be back for some time. But I think it best we warn Jorvan all the same.” He glances at the eager lad,and then back to the captain to suggest he understands his duty is to return the boy home safely. He begins to gather his things.

The Orange man seems mesmerized by Xisco’s wandering tale, and recites some of the words as if to catalogue the information for later. He then responds to the captain. “I need the Glow as you need water. To long without it and I wither. To much of it, and I drown. But I can keep them off you. The Wildling’s bravery is undoubted, but that shoulder-cannon of his seems ill-fated to bring some of the small party back. Do not fear for them, I can keep them at bay while you do your business below.” He examines each of the crewmembers carefully, as a matron would examine freshly threshed grain at the market. He stops in front of Harmony. “You girl, you appear to have a touch of the Void in you. Let me take it from you.” He reaches out his hand, as if to grab her chest, but pauses to wait for her approval.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Harmony's brow is furrowed like a freshly-plowed field under her hat as she listens to Xisco's rambling tale, trying to make sense of it in the current situation. The Orange Man's words don't register, but his hand reaching out does. She starts to raise her own right hand, but catches herself when she realizes what he said. "What? No, I don't think it's the Glow, It's just...I don't...oh, whatever. Go ahead." She turns her back, though, arms crossed over her chest, still looking annoyed. Let the crazy man do his thing, she thinks. He seems to know what he's doing, at least. She looks at the other three people staying here with her, wondering what she's gotten herself into.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Finally fed up with the situation, Blendin, against his better judgment, blurts out in the general direction of Harmony (while cleaning his 'hand cannon'), "I don't know about the rest of the crew, but I wouldn't be the least bit unhappy if you decided we're too dangerous a bunch of sailors. I'm sure the farmer wouldn't mind your company back to Jorvan."

    ReplyDelete
  39. Harmony lifts her hat to glare at the wildling. "And I'd be happier going with them, but if we don't destroy what's down there--whatever that is--" she rolls her eyes in Xisco's direction, "the goblins will keep attacking until either they or the rest of the island is dead. And what would you have done if I hadn't lured away the score of goblins? Not to mention that any of you are likely to be wounded down there. Who will heal you like I did the last time we were attacked by goblins, laddie?" She raises an eyebrow, and touches of dwarven accent are slipping into her speech. "No, I dinna like it, but it has to be done." She seems rather upset. Perhaps the Orange Man is right that she's feeling the effects of the Glow.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Blendin mumbles under his breath something about finding healing potions the next time they stop at a town with a market.

    ReplyDelete
  41. "You do have to be careful about those healing potions. A classmate once mixed some up and sold them to the local militia; shortly after a riot broke out and some of them were used. And shortly after that Ron lost a few teeth. The potions worked well enough for the healing, but the soldiers didn't much care for the side-effects. Now, some of the girls down in the casino, Sophie and Ruthella and Linda or Lisa or Lila, in particular, found them to be quite humorous, but I'd guess maybe the wives were a little unappreciative. Or not. No, it was Elizabeth. Yeah, Lizzy. Don promised them it was only temporary, but you never know with that sort of thing. The soldiers, not the girls. Well, maybe them, too. Dom was something of a playboy, I hear. Of course, he skipped the island shortly after that...

"Any-who, the architecture was magnificant--I recorded as much as I could in my journal here, took a few rubbings too. Now, as to how old it is, it depends on whose reckoning you'd mean. The dwarves, thinking that they invented any form of architecture or sculpture of merit, would likely put the age fairly recently, say..."

  42. the Orange man's hand is cold and raspy are it clasps the back of harmony's neck. she sees the world around her pulse in rhythm with her heartbeat. her skin tingles as he releases her, and she feels as if she were roused from a nightmare, suddenly aware of the safety of her bed. she does not see the look of fury that comes over the wizard as he stumbles away, doubled over. he straightens and looks himself again.

  43. Harmony takes a deep breath and waves to Fairfield, frowning. She turns back to everyone. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. Well, I do, but...anyway, I apologize for my words, especially to you, Master Blendin. They were true enough, I suppose, but, well, I could have said them differently."
