It’s good to have Shadowhaven at your back. You see the full breadth of the damage to the Shipyards. They are, in effect, gone. There are some small piers and pilings remaining, but the majestic covered walkways are all but nonexistent. Even so, there are signs of new work, and as you overfly the area you see orange cloaks suggesting that the Roofer’s Guild has taken to the task.
The Olic is a fine vessel, swift and true, but without the material comforts found on the Swoose. Her covered decks are not terribly cramped with the crew of 7, but more than you are used to; with the constant Glow it isn’t long before the grumbles begin. The effects appear mild, and with the limited exposure afforded by the hull most days and enforced on those who begin to show signs of Madness, they remain so.
Xisco is a capable if not gifted sailor, and is always willing to assist. He plays games with the crew in the evening for the first week, until a fight almost breaks out following a particularly good hand total take 39 cogs from the crew. That convinces Gardner to restrict gambling, at least for the next few days. After that, Xisco asks to look through Gardner’s library, and spends his time investigating a book of ancient draconic dialects. He makes notes in a small notebook that seems to always be by his hammock, and the ‘scritch scritch’ sound of his dry quill is a sore point for Wung, who moves to sleep in the empty hold.
Clovis has a small brazier where he heats a fire, which in addition to its use cooking their catch, he also puts to work heating and forming bronze. He appears to be adding a narrow strip of bronze to the outsides arms of his leathers, with disks at the elbows and shoulders. He claims it to be a lightweight armor against swung weapons, but the crew remains dubious of his pronouncements. The work goes faster than anticipated and appears finished at the end of the first week. He then raids the powder stores and begins affixing explosives to the ends of crossbow bolts. He deems the initial tests successful, although it costs him 9 bolts before he is satisfied. He finishes modifying 4 ‘exploding’ quarrels, and modifies a friction-based fuse and striker with blendin’s fuse line onto the end of the crossbow by the time you arrive.
Blendin, for his part, tends to his flowerpot and seems quite enamored with a new piece of jewelry. He mopes a few days about Moira, Preslim and/or Halcon, presumably, but is able to see to his tasks. Gardner sees no evidence of illicit materials. Taz claims he has been singing to his wrist though, and the medicus recommends some herbs to help calm his mind.
The captain puts the ships stores under lock and key after finding the medicus rummaging through the liquor cabinet. He claimed to be looking for an additive for a poultice, but you rather have him go through more ‘official’ channels. Gardner spends his free time reading his book about the winds. He also recognizes the holiday’s passing during his careful watch of the books, and passes out an extra ration to the men.
The ropes creak softly as the ship begins a slow turn to starboard. You caught sight of the island not 3 hours ago, and now are beginning to scout a landing site. All appears as you left it. The ruin stands above the ring of trees, and the field of flowers is still in full bloom. The wreckage of the voider ship appears as you left it.
ooc: The crew was paid their first month’s wages from you guys, even splitting.
Boating roll for landing has been made – as long as you don’t try to set down in the trees you should be fine to go ahead and land her wherever.

"I must say, it is good to be back on Molten Rock. Captain, may I have permission to visit the graves before I assist with the looting?"
ReplyDeleteClovis rolls his eyes at the wildling. "Do whatever you like. It'll take me an hour or more to get everything set. And let me tell you, I'll be glad to get out of the damn glow and into some nice, civilized rock, even if it's weird Drakin stuff."
ReplyDeleteThe dwarf goes to his cabin and suits up in his full gear, including breastplate, helmet, musket, and his new weapon. "There may be who-knows-what down there, so bring your weapons for when we get it open, eh, boys?"
"So this is Blendin's Garden, huh? Ooh, interesting architecture for that tower over there... Huh. Looks like another ship over there; did someone else crash here since you were last here?" After receiving answers, Xisco will follow the dwarf's lead and grab his gear (tool satchel and journal in addition to weapons and buckler).
ReplyDelete"Can't say I'm thrilled to be back at Gardner's Folly. We'll set down on top of the tower."
ReplyDelete"I'm not sure I understand your name for this Island." Blendin looks at Gardner quizzically, "What folly are you looking to immortalize?"
ReplyDelete"By the way, is that a know to my request?"
With the ship at rest, staked down, and sails furled, the Ollie perchs atop the ruin. The crew makes ready to disembark. Taz, Wung and medicus don’t seem particularly adventuresome, but Wung and Taz offer to try and catch some of the skylers you saw roosting in the trees as you circled, and the medicus seems willing to set up rain funnels for the storms that look to be brewing on the horizon.
ReplyDeleteGardner’s look at the clouds indicates that it won’t be too much of a gale, but should bring much needed water. He checks the lines securing the vessel and is certain they will hold. Tooly and Xisco have already begun their trek down into the ruin with only a small lantern for lighting. Blendin seems torn as to where to proceed next; the fields or the ruin.
Tooly winds his way down to the room with the iron door and examines it again, including using his hammer to try to determine how thick it is by how it sounds when he hits it in various spots (metallurgy 8). He eyes the eyelets in the ceiling, and the spot where the presumed windlass used to be, and says, "Well, shouldn't be too hard to get it open. Any idea what the writing says?"
ReplyDelete(OOC: Unless something unexpected happens:)
Tooly then scouts the halls to make sure they're still empty--either the place makes him a bit nervous, or he's putting off going back outside into the Glow. Once he's satisfied, he goes back to the ship to draft Taz, Wung, and Medicus into carrying rope, tools, and various spare parts back down to the room. As an afterthought, he has them bring a few lanterns, candles, or torches, too.
Once there, he sheds his breastplate and helmet, sets his musket and flame gun against the wall and sets about building a new windlass. Anyone who bugs him or asks to help is drafted into running strong cables through both sets of eyelets however they can.
--------------
OOC: The new windlass will be a cylinder capped by a disk with steep teeth, like the kind used to raise a medieval portcullis, probably carved out of wood and mounted on a wooden stand, though if any of the ship's rigging is sturdy enough, he'll use that. If the iron is very thick, he might send Wung out to chop a tree or thick branch.
"Fascinating," Xisco exclaims while examining the walls when first entering the building. He pulls out his notebook, flips through its blank pages, pauses as if reading, flips back and forward a few times, repeating, before eventually turning to the existing bookmark and scratching a few lines with his quill. This process is repeated several times throughout the building (Lore 4, Linguistics 4). He will insist on examining the entire building (Notice 4) in this way before helping in defacing any artifacts.
ReplyDelete"Suit yourself, Blendin. Just don't take too long and join us in the ruin when you return. Or if you want to wait we can go as a group later."
ReplyDeleteGardner puts on his armor, checks his pistol and sword, finds his buckler, and grabs his book of Drakin languages.
He says to the crew, "Sounds like a good idea. Replenish the stores. Wung, we could probably use your muscles if you want to join us in the ruin after you're done fishing."
Also, Gardner will whistle to Fang and bring him along. "And Wung, bring a bit of skyler for Fang when you come down."
ReplyDeleteAfter Gardner's promise to visit the center of Fireburst Island, Blendin made sure he had everything prepared (including his potion and explosives) and followed the others.
ReplyDeleteTooly chuckles at Xisco's enthusiasm for the old writing. "A gentleman AND a scholar. I think we traded up from the big guy." It's hard to tell if he's being sarcastic or is just bad at compliments.
ReplyDeleteScritch, scritch, drip, drip.
ReplyDeleteIt began raining about an hour ago. The ship is secure, and the hatches sealed. Wung and Taz are keeping guard on the ship, while the Medicus has arrived with two flagons of water, some roasted fish, and a salty, gritty vegetable that he claims is safe to eat. “Water stores are half full already, sir, and I’m smoking the rest of Wung’s catch. We should be good for a few days yet. Uh, Jolly Feast to you, then.” He bolts a piece of the vegetable with a slobbery sound and a grin before heading towards the stair.
The air is not as stale as you’d expect inside the ruin, probably a combination of the rain and the two openings giving a reasonable airflow. You investigated the side hallways and found everything as it had been left. The room with the brass hinges and pillars on the floor still has footprints from Jay and Tooly’s last visit, and the crawlspace with its six holes and three races has marks in the stone dust where they rubbed their bellies against the ground.
Tooly’s work is going well enough. He estimates about 12 more hours to get the windlass put together, and the first 3 have gone well enough. He has a wooden brace, with long gold staples hammered into cracks between the stones so that it won’t twist under the weight. The locking mechanism has a long way to go yet, and he’s busily carving a wooden gearshaft, and has the pieces for a winch handle ready to assemble. He is beginning to tire, so will likely need to sleep soon.
He said something earlier about the door being thicker than he thought it might be, probably about half a foot thick. He does a quick calculation out loud, and tells those around him it probably weighs the better part of 8-10 tons. Estimated value: a quarter million cogs. Since then, his mood seems to have improved dramatically.
Xisco puts down his notebook, and examines the floor carvings carefully while Gardner flips through the draconic text and blendin holds a light.
He had examined the wall tiles extensively over the past couple hours, and found they are missing in large sections. Even so, Xisco can tell that a mythological scene of some variety is depicted. Battles, worship, gods, heroes and villains, all the symbolic representations one might expect. The mural that remains does not have any text; in fact, the only text he sees is that found on the floor of the ruin. It appears that the entire building was once carved with these relief murals, and they were likely painted, but most of that is lost to time. Unfortunately with the extensive damage to the mural, he cannot derive much about the stories being told.
He has however started to make sense of the words on the ground, with Gardner and Blendin’s assistance.
There appear to be 4 statements. The depth of the cut for each symbol gives some indication of their emphasis, and you have begun to decipher the phrases, although at this stage it is rough:
“Here Fizzgig, the dark forces to destroy seven ancient king was buried with her fifth name.
The struggle for all time, the block is lost to us protection against evil.
He will have to destroy the reputation of his courage and his unwavering end.
This stamp, commemorating the loss of his eighth shield for the disorder can be opened again.”
"Hmm. The lighting isn't so good." Xisco snaps his fingers (6) and a three small glowing orbs appear. He points his fingers of the same hand about, moving the orbs around, increasing them in size and brightness, then touches his buckler and places it on the ground. "Blendin, you can go ahead and put that away for a bit." After pausing and looking about a bit Xisco appears to remember something and makes a slightly different motion with his hands (9, -1).
ReplyDelete"Sounds like the tomb of a king is down there! Or does that mean it's the king-killing wizard's tomb? It makes about as much sense as a skylar with nipples. Anyway, I think it's time to knock off. I'll get this finished tomorrow. Even if there's nothing but dust down there, we'll be rich!"
ReplyDelete----------
OOC: Unless everyone else leaves him alone in the room with the door, Tooly will bed down in the corner by his armor and weapons. Otherwise, he'll sleep in the ship.
"Woah, that's big..." Xisco mumbles as he stands up and starts walking towards the edge of the room. "I wonder what it's keeping in? Or is it out?"
ReplyDelete--------
BR, Xisco will try to find the how far the seal extends outside the room.
"I think I knew a trader in Bridgeways named Fizzgig. Fat and stupid. Frequent drooler. Always overpaid."
ReplyDeleteGardner watches Xisco intently as he does his magic. "You're full of surprises. What else can you do?"
Gardner assigns watch (one on the ship, one on the room if people are sleeping both places) and gets bedding from the ship to sleep down in the room. "I'm tired of being out in the glow." As he lays down, Fang comes over and flops next to him.
Blendin volunteers for the first watch on the ship. While on watch, Blendin will keep his eyes and ears open, while humming his little song.
ReplyDeleteXisco makes it to the edge of the room before stopping; he then begins walking around the perimeter a bit, staring at the floor, before stopping again. He blinks twice, shakes his head, looks up and states, "You said something, Captain?"
ReplyDeleteThe crew wakes to the noises of Tooly hammering away on a chisel. The night was uneventful, and the rain continues without sign of letting up. Fang seems to be pleased enough to sleep in the corner despite the noise, and has a skyler bone between his teeth.
ReplyDeleteTooly’s progress has slowed, and just before lunch a critical part of the winch shaft cracks. He might be able to repair it, but thinks it best to start over (you rolled a 1 and a 2. Nice one.) Even with this setback it should be complete by dinner, and his spirits have improved (boffo roll for your glowmadness exposure. You are no longer glowmad penalized).
Gardner can’t make heads or tails of the book (1,3) but is happy to see Xisco (8) has had some luck improving the translation – he thinks. His quill is a flurry and then he states aloud in the common tongue:
“The fifth king Fizzgig of his name, the old dark destructive force on the seventh. In our fight against evil with his infinite lost in stagnation destroyed. The following eighth sealing against crime is a shield to mark the loss will not be opened.”
Blendin brings down breakfast from the ship. The crew is keeping a vigilant watch on the horizon while staying out of the rain as much as possible. He had an odd dream, somewhat different than his old ones but just as vivid. In this one, he sees a stern woman with a round belly, pouring a pitcher of water into a bowl. As she pours, a young girl puts her hands in the stream of water, as if cupping a drink. But instead of bringing it to her lips she throws it into the air, where it crashes down around her. Where the drops land, orange dots of light appear, flickering like candle flames. One of these flames is brighter than the others, and the girl and woman hold hands, and dance around it.
Xisco shares the additional information that he's learned:
ReplyDelete"So, this dialect is primarily used for recording spells, which makes sense since an enormous seal emanates from these words towards the edges of this room, then down. I don't know what will happen if we breach it... Also, there's another spell on the door itself. Or, was. Not sure on that..."
---------
If he hasn't already done so, he'll take a break from translation duties at some point to check out the crawl space and rooms below.
Irritated by the setback, but feeling better for the time out of the Glow, Tooly pipes up to Xisco, "Of course they sealed it. Sounds like they locked up someone they didn't much like down there and didn't want them to escape. Whoever it was is surely long dead..." He trails off, then continues, "...unless it was some undead wizard or something. We'll want to be careful when we open this. Maybe we should bring down some powder and grape to make a big bomb. Or cover it with the cannon. Though..." he trails off again. "I'll rig the crank with a quick release, so we can drop the door on anything that tries to come out. Just in case." With that, the dwarf resumes working.
ReplyDelete"You're more experienced in these sorts of things, Xisco. What's your gut tell you about this? I don't want to die but I also don't want to leave this island empty handed."
ReplyDeleteBlendin pulls out one of his "special" flasks. "If its bombs you need, its bombs I got."
ReplyDeleteXisco strips down to his trousers, and folding his dress shirt neatly, crawls into the narrow space. His thin frame enters easily, and with his orbs of light, he can easily see that this area does not have murals like many of the rest (6). However, there is one good find – he notes that the first set of holes are directly over the 3 pillars, while the second set are directly over Tooly’s workplace. He passes this information along to his companions.
ReplyDeleteTooly let’s out a whoop of victory (10) while turning the ratcheting crank. Wung is seated with a sour expression on a small pallet suspended from a rope. He had the misfortune of bringing your dinner down from the ship just as Clovis was making ready to test his device. Once he is a few feet of the ground, he states, “Wung get down now.” He shoots Tooly a pout framed between two big incisors before taking to the stairs two at a time. The dwarf takes this opportunity to test his rapid release, and the pallet crashes to the floor a moment later. It appears the device is ready.
Blendin had helped with completing the final few modifications to the mechanism, as well as tending the lanterns and is now seated with a wooden bowl in his lap, arranging his bomb flasks. He is humming his “favorite” tune, and making sure to not come to close to the open lantern flames with his explosives.
Gardner had a good deal of luck reviewing the draconic text, and helped Xisco, still shirtless as if to make a point about his exquisite though thin physique, with a new translation. They fear it will be difficult to improve it any further.
“Here lies the king Fizzgig, the fifth of his name, quite dark destroyer of the Seventh ancients. He, lost to us, eternal battle against evil, He, by his courage and determination, that revocation. This stamp commemorates the loss, and Shields arrival of the eighth against evil, not to reopen.”
Taz and the rest of the crew arrive to join the meal upon hearing that all is well with the winch. “Well, sirs, what can we do to help?”
"Well, the door's ready to open," Tooly says around a bite of skylar flesh, "but we may have some preparations to make. Sounds like it's a king down there after all, which is good. But can anyone tell if the door's got a magical seal like Skinny says the room does? I don't wanna pop the hatch and get a faceful of fire or something.
ReplyDelete"When we open it, I say Wung and Medicus turn the crank," he nods to the pair as he says their names, "and the rest of us stand on the hinge side of door, so it shields us. One person could keep watch as it opens from outside the room, too. If you're reading the squiggles wrong, they can tell us to drop the door if something tries to come out, and be out of range if something blows up."
----------------
OOC: I'm assuming the winch is on the hinge side, here, so the people cranking it will also be behind the door as it opens.
If no one is sure either way about the presence of a seal on the door itself, Tooly will take some extra time to build an eyepiece like a large jeweler's loupe to check for himself (Detect Arcana device, Weird Science: 9).
"I'll keep watch from outside the room with my explosives prepped," Blendin pipes in.
ReplyDeleteooc: I think that Xisco mentioned an, "enormous seal emanates from these words towards the edges of this room, then down. I don't know what will happen if we breach it... Also, there's another spell on the door itself. Or, was. Not sure on that..."
ReplyDeleteI'd take that to mean, yes, magical seal on the door. Wung and Medicus are in position, but Wung has leaned his maul against the wall within reach.
OOC: I took that to mean the room had a seal, and the door had a separate one, but he's not sure about the separate one. If it's not clear, we might need to make extra preparations. And unless he can tell us where the seal begins and ends, Tooly's going to make his eyepiece to see for himself, and maybe extend the crank outside the seal.
ReplyDeletenah, one seal extends over the entire floor (including the door) but it goes 'down' around the edge of the room. There is evidence of another spell/or 'residue' of a spell that he doesn't quite understand.
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome to make your loupe.
As far as extending the crank outside the seal - you all appear to be outside the seal currently, that is, on top of it. But, if you want to move it out of the room, say to a hallway or the pillar room that'll require some more rigging and tinkering. Probably another hour or two.
Once Xisco has clarified the seal situation, Tooly suggests moving the crank out of the room, preferably to the hallway, so everyone can be outside when it's opened.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is in the hallway a few hours later, safely positioned near the entrance to the pillar room and only a short jog to the exterior of the ruin. You left some candles to light the room, as well as a set of new orbs from Xisco. Wung and Medicus attempt to turn the crank. It is now attached to the main wench through a series of pulleys, granting even more mechanical advantage to those turning it.
ReplyDeleteIt does not budge.
In fact, even with the assistance of additional crew, all that occurs is that the crank and ropes creak with effort, and you begin to fear that further attempts to turn it will crack the shaft or break the rope.
It appears the door is locked. Tooly examines the seal with his loupe (7) and sees no evidence the barrier is disturbed, and it does not appear to be that which is holding the door closed.
ooc: thought I'd bump ahead since I imagined this is where we were going. apologies if you wanted to do something else first.
Blendin looks at the others, "We could always try to blast our way through."
ReplyDeleteOOC: Actually, since you clarified the seal situation, I wasn't going to make the loupe, in case I needed another gadget. Like a burrowing machine.
ReplyDeletefair enough. no loupe. I'll let you keep the barrier isn't sealing it info.
ReplyDeletelocking it, I guess I should say
ReplyDeleteOOC: I'll just use it as the power supply for the next thing I make (3 power points remaining). Speaking of which:
ReplyDelete----------------------
Tooly grimaces in frustration, then looks thoughtful, taking off his eyepiece. "Well, looks like we'll need to unlock it, then. Should have known. Hmm...I wonder if those pillars have anything to do with it..."
Xisco makes a couple of suggestions:
ReplyDelete"How much rope do we have? We could raise these pillars, attach them to the door, then try with the wench again, see if the extra weight forces it open?
"I hate to suggest it, but we might be able to break the seal by disturbing the words of the spell."
Before any other actions are taken, he'll try something to take a peek at what might be on the door... (Conceal the seal, 5; Detect door, 2-1, Bennie 6-1).
The dwarf shakes his head. "I think the pillars might be related to the lock itself. Let's unbolt the winch and see what happens when we lift a pillar upstairs."
ReplyDelete-------------
OOC: They were upstairs, right?
Detecting the door shows no additional magics "under" the seal - even the 'residual' spell appears gone - suggesting it is bound to the sealing spell as opposed to the door itself. The lettering remains unchanged.
ReplyDeleteIf you wish to run lines from the pillars to the wench through the holes in the ceiling, that can be done. It'll take a few hours, though, and you'll be tired at the end of it. I'll assume that's done, a watch is set, and we are at the next morning.
The rain has stopped.
You've attached lines with heavy spliced loops made by Taz and Gardner. They dangle from their holes in the ceiling. Blendin has made carabiners with metal and wood pins so that you can switch between the pillars (or attach multiple pillars at once) and attach them to the winch line easily. The lines have been color coded by Xisco to keep things straight as you're working: Blue, Red, and Green, using handkerchiefs, for the pillars left to right as you enter the pillar room. Additionally, the door has a spliced line, ready to be attached to the winch as needed.
"So, now what?" says Taz.
Tooly admires the crew's handiwork. The color-coded handkerchiefs are an especially nice touch. "I suppose I should go up there to look in the holes when we hoist the pillars, but I suspect we have to move them from one set of holes to the other, judging from the races running between the sets. We'll hoist 'em one at a time and see what we can figure out--unless anyone else has any ideas?" He looks around expectantly.
ReplyDelete"Sounds like a good plan. I'll be over here supervising," Gardner says as he sits in a corner with a book, petting his dog and snacking on skyler.
ReplyDeleteooc: Sorry Blendin isn't being much help. I, personally, am having a hard time visualizing the puzzle, and thus, cannot assist in its solution.
ReplyDeleteI'll give a picture later today.
ReplyDeleteooc: map really is coming, sorry for the delay, long day at the office thus far. get it to you shortly - should have gotten it to you already over the weekend. oops!
ReplyDeleteOOC: Tsk, tsk. Lazy bum.
ReplyDeletesee images above. I hope that helps makes the puzzle less puzzling.
ReplyDeleteTooly takes up position in the pillar room and signals Wung to hoist the first pillar, coded with the blue handkerchief, keeping his eye on th hole to see if there's anything inside when the pillar comes out--mechanical switches, strange glows, a deeper hole, etc. (Notice 4)
ReplyDelete----------------------
OOC: I remember a second set of holes, but I guess they were just in the crawlspace, not in the pillar room, now that I check, so I guess we don't need to move the pillars to another location.
The blue pillar raises out of its socket slowly until it is clear of the hole. It stands half again as tall as a man, appears perfectly sized for the hole. It is marked with drakonic text, as is the inside of the hole. It hums like a tuning fork as it is drawn out, but quiets as soon as it is clear.
ReplyDeleteUnable to read the text himself, Tooly calls Gardner and Xisco to come take a look, then swings the pillar over to set it beside the hole (assuming a flat base) and has Taz shift to the next line until all three pillars are resting next to their holes.
ReplyDeleteXisco arrives in the pillar room just as Wung begins winding the red pillar. As he examines the text on the pillar (3) but is unsure as to its meaning.
ReplyDeleteAs the pillar is raised, a series of creaks, clangs and booms echo through the ruin, as if mechanisms are moving out of site. The pillar is much shorter than its counterpart about the height of a child, and as soon as its clear of the hole, the hole seals seamlessly behind it. When it is set back on the same spot, it supports its weight.
Blendin, Gardner, and the crew in the main chamber a series of metallic clangs coming from the sealed door.
Wung and Taz begin attaching the green pillar to the winch.
ooc: do you wish to move the green pillar still?
After the odd sounds from the second pillar, Tooly shouts down to the crew below "Anything happening?" When they tell him about the sound from the door, he says, "Sounds good! I'll be right down! No, wait, Hook up the door hoist and see if it moves at all."
ReplyDelete-----------------
OOC: If the door budges, Tooly will head down to be present and put on his armor and helmet, musket against the wall nearby and flame gun in hand. If not, he'll have them hook up the green cord and hoist it.
click, CLANG, click, click, click, PING, click, click, and then something like this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.therecordist.com/soundbox/SBDBK01_BankVaultDoors.html
The door levers open slowly with a whoosh of air and a dank smell. The crew keeps careful watch, but sees no imminent danger from the opening (notice rolls were = 4, 5, 5, 6, so you all see the same things). The door itself appears to be a relatively thin inch thick sheet of iron over a few inches of lead, with a series of 2 inch holes about a handspan deep along the edges. You see the faces of matching iron pins, retracted, in the edges of the now open hole. Even with its less valuable content, you estimate the value of the door to be 50,000 cogs and probably twice the weight. If you can chip the pins out of their stone holders, you might be able to increase that amount to 60 to 65 if each of those pins are pure iron and a handspan long.
The door hinge stops moving at about a 45 degree angle, and does not appear to want to go further. The opening reveals a long stair, as wide as the door, cut into stone steps. They are shallower than traditional steps, and go down at a steep angle. They turn about 25 feet down abruptly, toward the center of the island, but you cannot see more than that from your current positions. It is dark and quiet.
Tooly walks cautiously around the opened door to view inside, weapon poised to fill the opening with fire in an instant. When nothing happens, he peers down inside, then eyes the door and locking pins with brief disappointment. He soon grins at himself and the wealth before him before eying the hole again. "So...who wants to go first. Blendin? I'll cover you from behind." The dwarf waggles his flame gun with an ironic grin.
ReplyDelete"While I'd love to just go running down into that dark hole there, perhaps Xisco or his orbs should lead the way," Blendin says, his voice thick with sarcasm.
ReplyDeleteGardner sits up from his position in the corner on the floor. He wipes the dust from his clothes and begins to stretch his old bones. "What about those spells? Are they still active?" Gardner asks Xisco.
ReplyDeleteXisco makes a move his hand and his eyes flash silver. "Still there, kind of spasming, but there's a hole for the door. Hold on."
ReplyDeleteHe runs up to the pillar room. Anyone watching him sees him make his hand motions three times before his eyes flash, with a bit of a pause and progressively longer cursing between each. He returns to the Door room, walking slowly and wiping blood from his nose. "No active magic up there, but there was something on the blue pillar. Maybe a lock or another seal. Not too sure. I'd like to spend some more time translating the text. And resting."
"Let me know if you need help removing the door there." He says, patting his satchel as he starts to walk back to the pillar room.
Gardner hobbles a bit at first, clutching his lower back, then straightens and walks through the door. "Who wants to see what a dead king looks like?" He whistles for Fang to follow. "Somebody bring a torch or something."
ReplyDeleteooc: added a map of the ruin. It'll change as we go - assuming other people go into the ruin of course. Since it might be relevant, the squares are inch-esque.
ReplyDeleteTooly sighs, detaching the bayonet from his musket and sheathing it as a dagger. I'll go first, I guess. If you want to grab a lantern, you can follow me, but this baby..." he waggles the new flame gun, "isn't safe for anyone in front of it, and I don't need a torch in front of me blinding me. Wung, Taz, why don't you arm yourselves and come down with me an' the skipper."
ReplyDeleteOnce Gardner and the crewmembers are ready, Tooly leads off, leaving his musket near the opening, but taking his normal gear, and with his flame gun slung from the ring on his breastplate with the pistol grip in his right hand, left hand free.
----------------
OOC: Uh-oh, BR broke out the grip map...do we need to start a new thread?
sure, why not. Closing thread. new thread coming shortly.
ReplyDeleteAs an afterthought, Tooly finds some rocks to wedge in the door and some planks to prop it open, in case the winch fails or someone bumps the quick-release.
ReplyDeletesure, go for it.
ReplyDelete
