Tooly is the last to arrive, and he looks a tad disheveled. The table is set with a selection of breakfast foods, sweets and pastries, as well as thin wooden carafes containing elven wines. A young man, strikingly handsome in spite of the tiniest hint of a scar under one eye, sits by Magnus with his feet on the table. Both are dressed in fine clothes, one in a double-breasted leather overcoat, and the other in satiny bedclothes that hide the chafes of metal shackles well. “Gentleman, please, eat some of this food! It’ll spoil, and I know what you’ve all been fed with. Dreadful swill in that tower, but this! This tastes like freedom! A toast, then, to 11 of those 12 riggers, who are shorter today for their treachery against me! And for that 12th, may he find a deep hole to hide in before I get to him.”
You have an amiable brunch, served by a half dozen of comely wenches. Magnus is in unusually good spirits. “This is my new good friend and, until recently, cellmate Xisco Fortuna. You might recall him from our mutual incarceration, and I don’t mind telling you he played no small role in yesterday’s victory! Perhaps he’ll tell us all about it, eh?" The corner of Xisco's mouth twitches.
“I find him to have a rather useful disposition - unless I’m out whoring, ha ha!, and have invited him to our table today to discuss potential opportunities! It seems he too has a passion for running afoul of the law, or at least his passions run afoul of the law. But enough talk of these legal wranglings. Tell me, what have you brought me? You said the trade was successful, eh? Let’s see those papers. Ah!” Magnus goes over Capt. Gardner’s books, and agrees with the dispensing of funds as is listed, and is fine with your split. “Wonderful news. I’ll be requiring some new crew and a new captain for the Grenadier, but she should be ready to begin that trade route inside a few weeks. This blasted legal business will take days to sort out. They still have half my documents in their lockboxes, but no matter. Pah!” He continues over your reports, and asks for details from each of the crew on various details and current events on the other islands. “A new vessel to boot, you lads are quite industrious! I hope the old owner won’t mind. So, you’ll be wanting your shares out of it I suppose, let’s say 1500 a piece? What's this business with Couriers and wizards you were harrying on about? And I figure you’ll need a cargo and a destination, soon, hmm? I fear it will take me some time to put that together, what with my books missing. You may need to tend to our affairs on your own in the meantime, as I hear already that a certain Trade Council commander is itching to see more of you.”
ooc: I’m imagining no mention of Mystery Island has been made to magnus at this point – if you wanna bring it up with him, go for it. You’ve all gained an enemy (minor) in cogsworth.

"Mr. Greenbottom, is there any chance you have run across a wizard by the name of Halcon in your trading? This is the wizard to whom we helped the courier deliver her message."
ReplyDelete"Or know where I might be able to find the drakin alchemist Preslim?"
ReplyDeleteGardner is too honest for his own good. He tells Magnus about the island and the iron door and potential for more salvage left in in the ruin.
ReplyDelete"We'd like to go back and see what all we can haul back, and we'd like to do it in a ship other than the Swoose, much as we all love her. What would you say to us buying you out on the Ollie, or us selling you our shares in both the Ollie and the Swoose and us buying another ship. We'd still work with you of course."
Distracted by the food and a night doing things other than sleep, Clovis is too slow to give the old man a kick or elbow before it's too late to stop him. If looks could kill, though, Gardner would be half-dead.
ReplyDelete"Yeah, we'll trade you our shares in the Swoose for yours in the Ollie. Seems fair to me, since the Swoose can carry more and all. We'll certainly want to keep working with you, though, or what was the point of getting you off the hook?" The dwarf grins. "I figure you'll have plenty of high-profit jobs for a small, fast, well-armed ship. We'll want to check out that island first, and swing by Mount Ore to get some equipment before we take any new contracts, though." He glares meaningfully at the rest of the crew around the table.
---------------
OOC: The Ollie is technically worth more than the Swoose, but if Tooly realizes that, he probably figures Greenbottom should be grateful for saving his hide.
Jay speaks up, "I'm staying with the Swoose." Everyone looks at Jay, all in surprise, except Gardner and Magnus.
ReplyDeleteXisco can't contain himself, "That seems daft! Why would you stay with that piece of junk?" The sharp looks from Jay and Magnus cause him to quickly add, "No offense; I mean I've seen the ship in the docks before, and... well... I..." Jay shrugs and leans back into his chair, while Magnus breaks into an ornery grin and begins to chuckle. Xisco visibly relaxes as he realizes his offense was not grave.
"Well, in any case, it looks like you might be getting into something a bit heavy here, and I don't wish to intrude, so I'll get my report out of the way here and be about my business.
"I dropped by Winn's room the night before last. I convinced him to join me for a few drinks before getting to your business with him, so we went out to Choirhall. Well, after a few drinks and a few laughs he joined be for same gambling, and after a bit we ran into the McKree twins. We were having a gay time about and they, the twins that is, decided to join us. Well, after visiting a couple more casinos we ended up at the McKree manor for a game of Dragon Scales and Ship Sails, and some port, then... Well, I can't very well get into the details. In any case, I woke up yesterday about the time your trial was taking place in Faith's room; don't quite remember how that happened; I went across the hall to check on Winn and there he was passed out in a massive tangle of naked flesh, snoring loudly. I decided not to disturb him and just slipped out. Oh!" Xisco pulls out a rather large purse of cogs and tosses it towards Magnus, "I never got around to discussing your business proposition to him. Didn't seem to be necessary there at the end, and I didn't feel like waking him, as I said.
"In any case, I didn't realize this until just now, but Sapphire and Marcy are good friends, so I should probably start looking for a ride off this island... Marcy might come looking for me, and I really don't need any more trouble from her father..." Xisco pushes his chair back from the table, while wiping his mouth with a napkin.
Clovis rolls his eyes at Jay's determination to sail on a floating gasbag, but figures he can bring him around to sensible thinking--or buy his share of the Ollie. He cackles appreciatively at Xisco's tale slapping the table (or, if Xisco is in range, his back).
ReplyDeleteGardner sighs, tinged with annoyance and shoots Jay a look that seems to say, "Really? You're leaving me with these people?"
ReplyDelete“I don’t know a wizard named Halcon, but I’ve met Preslim now and again, he’s a amiable old fellow. At least I think he’s old, its hard to tell with those scaly buggers. No offense. I don’t know exactly what kind of work he’s in, though. Potions, mostlike. They’re all in potions over there. He’s at the guildhall I’d imagine, that’s where I’ve sent runners to in the past. What’s your business with him?”
ReplyDeleteGardner recounts his tale, and Magnus’ eyes grow wide. “An island?! You boys are lucky charms, I tell you! I knew there was a reason I kept you lot around, ha! Of course, go back, salvage whatever you can. What about natural resources? Is there anything else there of note? Hardwood trees, you say? Add a body of water and a dozen comely lasses and I tell you that island could be a man’s kingdom! As it is, still a great find, gentlemen. I’ll want soil samples for all my ships when you return – you never know when such a thing might be of worth. Unless you wish to keep it for yourselves? I could be persuaded for a price…”
Greenbottom sours slightly as you pitch your plan to move off the Swoose, and balks openly at the idea of you selling him both and moving to another vessel. “I don’t need more empty ships. The Grenadier’s sails are shot full of holes, and what crew she had will need to be replaced. I doubt you lot should stay here that long. No, if you must move to another sturdier vessel, which given these past few months I fully understand, then this Olic Haversham? seems to be choice. I’d be willing to part with my shares in her for your service to me these past few days, as well as your shares in the Swoose, of course. It ain’t fair to me of course, but when is anything? And without your good words, I’d be a couple handspans shorter today!” He slaps a passing girl on the rump.
ReplyDelete“But you won’t be much good as my trade route scouts. I’ll have to get someone else for that I imagine, the Swoose will still fly in my fleet until she’s lost to the Void or I’m dead! Maybe Herman, he’s a bright lad, and itching for a command, but I’ll deal with that later. Here’s my offer to you: I’ll give you the same deal I’ve given Veers. It’s your ship, one share each, and one more for the captain here to keep things like you remember. Captain, you’ll owe me a share, then, that’s 1500 cogs by my count, but you can’t have a crew not knowing their place.
“You fit it, you hire crew, you keep her afloat, you pay your port fees, and you take on whatever cargo you can find and afford on other islands. But when you’re in Shadowhaven, I get first crack at filling your hold, when you return to Shadowhaven I get first crack at buying your goods. I don’t rob my trade partners, so you’ll be assured a fair price, but I won’t promise to be a fool like those boys on Canopy. In exchange for that service, I’ll pay your registration fees and give you access to my trade contacts list, spanning at current 15 islands, which you can use in your endeavors. Also, as a member of my fleet, you’ll be afforded all the other benefits your accustomed to, lodging here, and so forth.” He takes a long pull on his glass, and then signals one of the ladies behind him to top off everyone’s.
“Little dwarf bastard, I thought for a moment their you’d sold me out. You were probably trying to wink at me and tell me everything was fine, eh? Doesn’t work when you do it, you little shit. HA! As for Mount Ore, they’re usually after wood, wood and more wood. I’m afraid I don’t have much to spare. You could take tiles, I have a shipment of ceramic tiles gathering dust in the warehouse, but I don’t know how much they’d desire them.” Jay’s outburst interrupts Greenbottom, who guffaws at his exchange with Xisco. “Seems we have a bit of a problem then, don’t we? If Jay doesn’t sell me his share in the Swoose, I’d say you owe me another 1500 cogs, and Jay the same. Of course, there’s another option, it seems. Have a seat Xisco; pretend those angry fathers and fiancées are out there waiting for you.
“As I see it, Xisco needs a ride off this rock. He’s an accomplished salvager to hear him tell it, and an adequate one from what I hear through my channels. He’s reliable, honest when you need him to be,” he nods at the money before you, “And it seems,” he throws back the bag of coins to Xisco,” he is recently become wealthy. I’d let him buy my share, and if Jay is amenable, he can have his too. That gives him an equal part with the crew, and you guys a new partner.” Jay snorts in something not unlike agreement. Jay shares a look with Gardner that says, “Better you than me.”
Blendin pulls out his potion and in all honesty says, "I'd like to see what he has to say about this."
ReplyDeleteAfter Magnus presents his offers, Blendin hesitates before making a request. "May we have some time to think this over. I could use three to four days to get my bearings and decide what is best for me. I'd appreciate the time to consider."
Tooly eyes the Wildling. "I don't think it'd be a good idea to stay here too long. If Cogsy has time to recover, he'll find a way to get us arrested, at the very least, even if we get released again for lack of charges. He's mad enough now that he might even do something stupid like hire thugs. We'll be sailing the Ollie with an empty hold, so no need to stay to find cargo. If we can get the skipper's precious windsilk sails fast enough, I suppose that might be worth waiting for, but frankly I'd be happy enough leaving tomorrow--or tonight."
ReplyDeleteThe dwarf turns to Xisco. "Well, I don't mind having you along, I have to say. Maybe you'll be more fun in port than the big guy. Not that he's so bad when you get to know..." He trails off, furrowing his brow. "Well, he's good in a fight, anyway."
--------------------
OOC: Trading Jay for Xisco, eh? This could be interesting.
I still say out best move is to loot the island, and if there's nothing there of value but the door, sell it on Canopy for lumber and trade the lumber on Mount Ore for a reinforced hold, which will give is an extra cargo unit. There's lots of other good stuff available on Mt. Ore, like cannon and long-range guns and armor plate, but the reinforced hold is a no-brainer, I think.
If there's anything besides the door, we'll see.
I also think we should find Taz, at the very least, for extra crew.
Xisco sits at Magnus's request; he seems quite interested in the proposition of joining the crew, doubly so given the dwarf's interest in an expeditious departure from the island.
ReplyDelete"I'm sorry to distract from the topic at hand, again, but," turning towards Greenbottom, "fiancés? What fiancé?" He looks genuinely perplexed.
------
It just wasn't in Jay's character to leave his home (sadly, Swoose) and family (sadly, Magnus). BR and I have been having fun with Xisco, 'though, so hopefully the rest of you will as well.
OOC: I think Magnus was referring to the men expecting to marry the women Xisco's been seducing.
ReplyDeleteooc: I think sam knows that too, but Xisco isn't terribly good at background checks with his ladies, it seems.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Ah...
ReplyDelete“Xisco my boy, it seems all those women have addled your senses. Were we all that lucky...”
ReplyDeleteWhen Blendin produces his flask, Magnus exclaims, “Egad, man, put that thing away. It’s mostlike poison, and at a minimum unappetizing!” Magnus waves a hand towards the small potion bottle. “I’m sure the alchemists would drool over it though. Be off to them if you must.”
When Blendin makes his request, Magnus shakes his head. “I’d rather we settle this now so that I know whether to replenish both or only one of the vessels, how many crew to hire, and what other arrangements to make, but I can tolerate a few days if I must. The deal is fair boy, perhaps I’ll come to my senses if you wait to long.” He softens slightly, adding, “It seems you have some business with alchemists and this wizard, which is fine by me. They are good friends to have. But I can’t have you putting two of my ships in jeopardy again so soon while you weigh your decision. This is the sound of opportunity, Blendin. I should have a day or two warning if Cogsworth is moving against me, or against you, through the Council. But Clovis has the right of it. A boatload of shepherds arrived right before I was arrested, and the Piemaker’s are always looking for work. Either way, I’d be careful and quick about your business.”
“I’m afraid that windsilk sails haven’t been seen in the city in over 2 months, so at least you’ll save time there. Have you seen the mess of the port? Its atrocious, amazing any trade gets in at all these days.” Magnus continues grumbling to himself.
ooc: It’ll probably take 3 or four days to restock, round up crew, relax a bit, and whatnot – you were at the end of a long voyage. But I wouldn’t dilly dally
Tooly is quite agreeable to Magnus's plan for distribution of the shares, and will happily trade his share in the Swoose for another share of the Ollie.
ReplyDeleteWhen the brunch concludes, Tooly staggers off to whatever quarters Greenbottom has provided for a nap. He awakens before dinner time, less groggy, and hits the market to buy some bronze. He decides to forgo a trip to any taverns this evening and instead falls asleep aboard the Olic after dismantling his precious flare cannon. In the morning, he finishes reconfiguring it.
The flare cannon was a single brass tube inside a wooden housing, with a wooden handle near the back that he pulled back and released to charge it. He has doubled the tube over, now, with the handle sticking down from the lower end, which is plugged and slightly shorter than the upper, open end. He has fitted the pistol grip and body of his healing device over the U-bend, so it looks like two tubes emerging from the cylinder. Gripped by the pistol grip and the charging handle, the new device resembles a firearm, but its only sight is a small bead near the end. He has fitted a ring to the top rear of it so he can attach it by a cord to the ring on his armor. The whole thing is barely arm-length, being just over half the 3-foot length of the flare gun.
Either enamored with his new toy or paranoid about retaliation but Cogsworth-hired thugs, he carries this new weapon with him at all times in Shadowhaven on a sling that emulates his one-point armor attachment. He spends the next few days helping out in any way he can with getting the Ollie ready to depart ASAP.
----------------
OOC: If anyone has more to say/do at breakfast, just ignore this for now.
I'm buying some bronze for armor (arms at least, but let me know what legs would cost), then converting my flare gun to a compact Burst weapon. 2d6 hours = 6. Weird Science/Repair roll (whichever is needed) = 11.
Bridgeways is 1 week's travel from Canopy, if we wanted to get some windsilk there.
"I think we're all satisfied with your offer on the Ollie and the Swoose. Though I've never much cared for the performance of a sloop compared to a skiff. I've got no problem with Xisco as a partner as long as he knows his way around a ship.
ReplyDeleteAs to the island, we'll go and see what we find in terms of immediate salvage. As to its long term development, well that's really up to you as you've a half stake in it, we're all just happy to collect our shares of the proceeds from whatever happens. Build me something near the center for when I retire."
--------------------------------
Persuasion 8
On the subject of fiancés Xisco unconsciously rubs the scar beneath his eye. He is generally chatty, and once the formal transactions for his shares of the Olic are completed he begins the process of trying to get to know his new business partners and shipmates. He is also quite interested in details about the island.
ReplyDeleteMagnus grins at Gardner’s jest (8 vs. 10) and says, “We’ll see about the deed to your castle later, Captain. For now, I think the salvage you describe is more important than any cargo I could grant you. So, it appears that you and I are agreed, and Clovis here is happy with the arrangement. Xisco, pay the man, and pass over what’s left to me, if you would?”
ReplyDeleteJay makes a show of counting his share of the coin from Xisco, while magnus just nods and then ignores the stack of coins in front of him. “Well, Blendin, I guess it falls to you then. You’re partners, old and new, are for this new arrangement. What will it be?”
“This doesn’t involve me. I’ll see to my ship.” Jay tosses the coins in front of him to magnus. “That," He drops another purse on the table, "With this should cover shares for half the Swoose. I will be in my cabin.” He grunts at the group collectively by way of goodbye, and moves to leave the room. Magnus starts to interrupt, but just calls after him, "You'll have to get your own crew then, Captain!
ooc: I’ll resolve Tooly’s actions after I’m sure we’re done with breakfast.
Blendin looks to each of the men around the table. "Alright. I'm in, but I can' leave for three days. Sorry if that holds things up. Unless of course our necks are in the noose."
ReplyDelete“Good lad! It’s settled then. Now, let’s finish this food so that we don’t waste such an expensive feast.” Magnus waves a hand, and another round of plates arrive.
ReplyDeleteOnce the meal is complete, Magnus indicates he has other business to attend to, but will provide you with billets at the Broken Mast, a Linart Street establishment near the choirhall, instead of the usual warehouse, which he deems somewhat unsafe. He says to talk to Cecelia, and she will see to your security and lodging, and may have some leads on possible crewmen or ‘specialty goods’ if you are interested. He assures Blendin that he’ll be safer there than he thinks and its halfway to the Alchemist’s guildhall as well.
Tooly grumbles that he wants to drop by the Olic, but decides to join you for the time being. You arrive at the Broken Mast after a brief walk through the city. The streets around the Choirhall are quieter than usual, even for this early hour. The doorway to a dimly lit establishment is open, flanked by an awning built from sailcloth painted blue dangling from posts made of old ship spars, cracked with age. It is also visibly guarded, like most Linart operations. In this case, two lanky elves, both of which seem unimpressed by your small party, stand with their hands on the hilts of wooden swords. They wear woven wooden armor that’s been dyed to match the sailcloth.
The slenderer of the two speaks first, “This is a private establishment. What’s your business?”
Sorry Tooly, the opportunity to go to a gambling den on the company dollar overrides your tinkering desires, at least for now. That, and I didn’t want to split the party again just yet. Suffice it to say you’ll get to shop and tinker in a few, unless you get killed first.
Slightly shorter-tempered than usual, Tooly says, "We're here to see Cecelia, she's gettin' us rooms."
ReplyDelete--------------------
OOC: "Unless you get killed first," eh? Well, that makes me feel much better about not having my new weapon, then...
As the group is heading toward the Broken Mast, Gardner falls back with Blendin and tells Tooly and Xisco, "We'll catch up in a few."
ReplyDeleteGardner walks slowly with Blendin, pausing for a while as if trying to find the right words.
"You seem like you've had other things on your mind lately. You've been different since we met Moira. Now what you do on your own time is your business. But if there's anything that might bring trouble on the ship or the crew, then it is my business. I know you're young, and maybe don't have a lot of experience with women. So I understand if she can be very persuasive. Some women will use what they have not for love, but to get you do what they want. And it can feel good at the time, but sometimes they want too much. I know some couriers run a little side business for some extra money, moving things from island to island. With all this talk of wizards and alchemists and all her locked boxes and secret knapsacks its hard for me not to think it. I don't like the thought of someone on my ship smuggling that stuff. And the Lady help you if you're using it. That stuff will burn your brain out. You'll end up lying on the street out in the void - you'll go crazy from both at once. And I don't think its right to be selling it to other people, either. Some people can't help themselves and it ain't right to make money off of that. Now I don't want you to tell me yes or no because I don't want to be involved or know anything about it if it gets found in an inspection. But I want you to wrap it up and be done with all that by the time we shove off. I don't want it on board anymore. And I don't want to tell you what to do with Moira, but if she's only giving you what you want if you agree to help her smuggle that stuff then I think you should wise up and stay away from her. Think on it. After its all gone if you want to come talk about it with me you can."
Before Blendin can respond Gardner quickens his pace and rejoins the group, whistling for Fang to follow.
benny for JWW.
ReplyDeleteBlendin looks after Gardner with a quizzical expression as he rejoins the group ahead of him. Unable to contain himself, Blendin suddenly breaks out into a fit of laughter
ReplyDelete"...and I had nothing. So I went all in. The guy sat there for almost five minutes staring at his cards, then he folded. I don't know what he had, but his date for the night got rather angry at him after they saw my hand..."
ReplyDeleteGardner gets the sneaking suspicion that the lizardling isn’t taking his concern over Blendin's unexplained odd behavior very seriously.
ReplyDeleteThe two elves look at each other briefly following Tooly’s remark, before one shrugs and ushers you inside. The interior is surprisingly bright, lit in garish magefire. The bar has a number of patrons even at this early hour, and you see a half dozen elves, in their blue ‘livery’, scattered throughout the casino floor.
Xisco is still recounting his tale when a wisp of an elvish woman approaches, gliding more than walking. She has hair the color of daisies or buttercups and a dress the same blue, made of a heavy brocade. She says nothing at first, but gives you each an appraising look before settling her gaze on Xisco. Her voice is dispassionate, even for an elf.
“Welcome again to my establishment, Mr. Fortuna, isn’t it? You and your companions are welcome to partake of the services here. However, I will not accept your wilding as collateral and thus remind you any cash payments wil be made up front. I make it a rule not to deal with shepherds, not after last time. If you have no other means of payment, feel free to take him to one yourself. I’m sure one of the other patrons here could recommend a venue for such a transaction. Now then, how long will you be staying, and do you require any ‘additional’ services?”
"Actually, a Mr. Magnus Greenbottom should have already settled accounts for billeting." Xisco remarks, with a characteristic charming grin.
ReplyDeleteBlendin supresses his desire to scream and charge at this pompouse bitch.
ReplyDeleteInstead, Blendin gets himself closer to Tooly and whispers in his ear, "Any chance you could get the names of those Shepherd lovers in our midst?"
Tooly snorts, looking around appraisingly, none too happy with the elf woman's implications himself. "I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard. Don't get us delayed..." The dwarf trails off, then says loudly to the woman, "Mr. Fortuna an' me don't need help finding bedwarmers, and you're too skinny, anyway. You can show me to my room, though, girlie."
ReplyDeleteHer tone is still detached. “It appears we both misunderstood the situation. Sincerest apologies,” she continues briefly in the elvish tongue, staring intently at Blendin “particularly to you, forgeborn. You are safe within my walls as my guest and friend of Greenbottom. My business being what it is, I pray you understand my confusion. If you feel threatened while you are here, speak to me, and I shall see to it presently.”
ReplyDeleteCecilia returns to the common tongue, “Greenbottom friends are welcome in my house. I hear his trial was a failure, very fortunate. I also hear he is a tad unpopular with certain… interests. I will have my servants see to your rooms. Please, find your seats at any table, and enjoy what hospitality my home can offer.”
The next few days pass quickly. Cecilia’s “house” is well suited to the needs of voidfarers, and you find her service impeccable and attentive, but her familiarity with you somewhat unsettling. The first night is relatively uneventful. The next day, Tooly departs for the ship, and returns with a new toy that he assures you will eliminate any concern of being boarded in the future. He also bumped into Jay at the docks, hard at work readying the Swoose for travel with the help of Quint, who is wearing the largest windcharm you have ever seen. Xisco spends some time at the dice tables, and wins a small sum (7 vs. 1, gain 17 cogs). For his part, Blendin visits the Alchemist guild to inquire about Preslim. They inform you he is indisposed completing a transaction with the University, but should be there the next day. Fang seems to enjoy the new bar, and sniffs about the tables looking for scraps. His presence is tolerated.
Later that evening, Taz arrives at your table escorted by Cecilia, who says she heard he was looking for you. For his part, Taz is thrilled to hear how the trial went and get to know Xisco. He informs you that he has been busy as well, and has made inquiries into crew on your behalf, assuming that you have space for some. He has located Wung, informs you that Quint has joined Jay’s ship, Brecklum has decided to stay here for now and he bumped into a ship’s surgeon he knew from his time aboard the Armageddon. Cecelia seems overly aware of your business as well, and suggests you speak to a friend of hers, a dwarf named Sigurd if you are interested in purchasing cannon for your vessel.
The next day Gardner leaves early to ensure that the ship has been supplied for departure cost is 160 cogs – subtracting 40 each., returning in new finery and with a new steel sword, etched with delicate abstract designs. Even Xisco is impressed. Tooly picked up a few bars of bronze, and is busily drawing designs on a piece of parchment. (lost 150 cogs, can buy enough for the leg bits for another 225. Lemme know.) As you are all eating lunch together, a runner from the Lady’s Temple arrives with a message for blendin from Jorana. She would care to see him today, if he is available. When he inquires as to how they knew his whereabouts, the runner smiles and says, “the winds speak to us, too.” Blendin also remembers his other activity for the day, since Preslim should be returned as well.
ooc: Moving things forward a tad. The Olic should be loaded and ready to depart by midnight, unless you wish to take on additional crew, or perform other activities. I’ve assumed your actions, but if there are other things you want to have done in the last few days, include them in your update.
Most of the dwarf's time is spent making sure the Ollie is shipshape, and he seems eager to set sail.
ReplyDeleteAt his meals in the bar when the rest of the crew--or at least Blendin--isn't around, Tooly makes curious inquiries about Shepherds in Shadowhaven. He genuinely did not know anyone here dealt in Wildlings, and actually wants to know if it's true. If he picks up any names, locations, or clues, though, he'll pass them along to Blendin discreetly (Notice 5).
--------------------
OOC: I'll go ahead and spend the extra 225 for more bronze. Need prototypes, and the rest of the crew might be interested. Except maybe Blendin, with his fancy-shmancy magic mail.
I think we should take on the surgeon. Wung might be useful, too, but meh. Tooly would take Taz's vouching for the surgeon as good enough, but it'd be Gardner's call if he wants to interview him first.
In addition to gambling, Xisco will tag along with whoever is willing to bear his presence, in order to get to know his new partners and see what he'll be getting into.
ReplyDeleteHe does not seem too concerned about Cecelia's "overly awareness".
Tooly and Gardner travel down to the docks to ensure that the final supplies are loaded, and the ship ready to depart. They bump into Jay briefly, who is readying to leave as well after having loaded Magnus’ cargo of tiles. He wishes them well by saying, “If that door is worth something, I want a cut,” before returning to his ship. He has a few new crewmembers, including Quint and one you recognize from the Grenadier, but the rest are new faces. They seem sufficiently frightened of their new “captain.”
ReplyDeleteAs you batten down the last of your gear, you see a familiar silouette in the doorway to the ship. “Hello Tooly, Captain. I brought you these, before leaving.” Moira tosses some keys to you, which you identify as belonging to the locked chests. “Thank you again, and if you see Blendin, tell him to be careful.” She turns to leave.

Xisco follows Blendin through the crowded streets of the Choirhall district heading towards the Lady’s Temple. The wildling walks quickly, but Xisco is always on his heels, talking wistfully of women and games, and seemingly unaware that blendin might not desire company on this trip. He inquires about shiplife, the things Blendin has seen, and the general mood of the crew, trying to learn more about his companions.
Upon arriving, Xisco winks almost unconsciously at the priestesses, and pulls his windcharm out of his shirt, as if to present them with identification. They titter before turning their attention to Blendin. “Jorana will be with you shortly.”
Before Xisco has a chance to inquire as to Jorana’s identity, the high priestess arrives, her gauzy robes blowing about. She touches Blendin on the forehead, intoning, “Gentle Breeze and sustaining Rain.” She ignores Xisco’s presence, and stoops low to look Blendin in the eye. He can see Jorana’s scars clearly, and finds her disfigurement is not unlike his own, although his horns can be hidden with a file; she is afforded no such grace. “We have prepared this for you, Blendin. The Lady wishes you to keep it.” She produces a small bracelet, sized for his wrist. It bears no markings, but is made of smooth porous bone connected by a sinew. She places it around his wrist, and the bracelet tightens, crushingly at first to the point of being painful, but then eases and becomes almost weightless. Jorana laughs her breathy chortle, “Ah, he likes you. I thought he might. A bit ornery, like his mother, but willing to serve my Lady, and now you.” She looks at you carefully. “This is a great honor, for one not of our Order. Do not abuse this gift. You are charged with keeping him safe from harm until he is grown, and for that service he will lend his breath to you.” She stands, and turns to Xisco, now far more stern. “Well, human, do you come to pay tribute to my Lady. What brings you to this house? My daughters will not be easy fodder, if that is your purpose.” Xisco smiles with a glint in his eye.
Gardner is pleased to see both Taz and Wung again and is happy to hire them on (prefer wage as opposed to salvage share if they'll agree). He asks Taz to meet the ship's surgeon, and is pleased to have him if he appears competent. Garder will meet with Sigurd, bringing Tooly along if he'll come, about cannon for the ship. (How many do we need? I recall we have 2 of 4 right now, is that correct?)
ReplyDelete"Just accompanying my new business partner here on a walk, see. Getting to know him, and what. 'Though, looks like we're about to push off for a voyage, so I suppose it would be good to pay my respects to your Lady." Xisco glances around for the different effigies of the temple then begins to whistle a tune taught him as a boy by his mother for just such an occasion, directing his attention at various verses to the appropriate icon of the Lady. The tune seems a bit childish, causing some of the priestesses to giggle; but, although his whistling is a bit rough from lack of practice, his prayer is heartfelt.
ReplyDeleteAs Xisco makes his rounds, Blendin leans in closer to Jorana. "What is this, err... he?" pointing to the bracelet. "And what do you mean by his lending his breath? I'm sorry, I just don't know much about your order or what this all means."
ReplyDeleteTooly would be glad to come along for a meeting with Sigurd, but expresses doubt about the likelihood of getting real dwarven cannon here at a decent price.
ReplyDelete----------------
OOC: We have one cannon, the other was on the Swoose.
Tooly will buy some bolts for the crossbow as a ship's weapon, since the blunderbuss also went with the Swoose. He'll expect to get 4/5 of the price back from the rest of the shareholders.
Gardner and Tooly are greeted warmly. “Awrite mah laddies! Sigurd Copperhugh is ma nam, 'at taa blonde lassie tauld me ye woods gonnae-no by. Ah am plait tae make yer acquaintance! Ah see ye ur interested in mah wares. micht Ah interest ye in these braw cannon fur a meager sum ay 900 cogs apiece. Last ones oan th' islain 'at huvnae bin purchased by th' cooncil. Banded wi' finnest bronze they ur!” He raps his fist firmly on a pair of wooden cannon. The design is clearly dwarven even if the materials are not. The cannon are hollowed from carefully hewn logs with flattened sides, and wrapped with a thin but carefully hammered piece of bronze, inscribed with dragon scales. They are on streamlined carriages with for easy transportation and moving aboard ship. A rough visage of a dragon’s mouth has been marked into the wood, although the marks are shallow to avoid weakening the structure. While you conclude they have likely been ‘test-fired’ from the visible scorch marks, they seem in good, if not new, shape. “Whit will it be 'en? Shoods Ah hae them delivered tae yer ship? Ah hae a lad can taken them thaur by th' aicht beel.”
ReplyDeleteooc: The ship has 1 full-size cannon, a wood and rope one. You currently have 2 gunports on each side, that is, room for 4 total. Tooly has talked about adding gunports so that all 4 can be run out one side or the other at once (no, it won’t give you room for 8 guns), but you don’t really have the crew for that yet anyway. The price is a tad high – you’d expect 750 cogs each if they were brand new. Target number for haggling here is 6. You can use persuasion or streetwise if you wish as appropriate. A success will knock the price down 10%, a raise will get you 15% - he knows the value of what he has. He also has 6 lead shot for sale, 13 cogs each, and a single small barrel of grape (20 shots) for 200 cogs. Powder is included in these prices. Currently, the ship is loaded with 6 solid stone balls, and 4 shots worth of grape, after redistribution with the Swoose. He also knows someone who will sell you crossbow quarrels in lots of 20, for 35 cogs each lot. He’ll also charge you a delivery fee of 10 cogs.
In terms of crew, Taz assures you that his surgeon friend is competent if ragged in appearance, and asks you when they should all meet you at the vessel before departing to go collect your new crew. He states they will accept standard wages (250 cogs a month, total), and a share of any salvage to split amongst themselves. I’d say it splits into 9 shares as follows: 2 for the ship bank, 2 for the captain, 1 for magnus and Jay – they each get a half share since they were involved in the initial find, 1 for Tooly, 1 for blendin, 1 for Xisco, and 1 for the crew.
Xisco and Blendin update shortly.
Xisco’s song is lilting, and he has a fair singing voice to go along with his handsome appearance. A few additional priestesses show up in the corners of the hall to watch him croon.
ReplyDeleteJorana, however, focuses her attention on Blendin. “He is as your friend aboard the ship, only much, much younger. It appears the Lady wants you to be able to hear her voice, and she has asked this one to whisper to you for her. His voice is not so loud, so you’ll have to listen carefully.
“But there is another use for his breath.” She puts a hand on Blendin’s shoulder, and directs him towards a long parallel antechamber. Unlike the wind scoured open hall of the main temple, this chamber is long with a low ceiling, and lined with tapestries. “Here, give me your hand.” She clasps her hands around his wrist, leaving his hand extending outward and whispers quietly. Then, with a swift motion, extends his arm forward toward the wall hangings nearest him. A brush of air whistles past his fingers, and a tapestry depicting Bridgeways is ripped from its tethers to dance in the air, landing a few paces away. Jorana smiles as she lets go of his wrist. “He’s ornery, like his mother.” She turns and moves to reenter the main chamber.
Blendin looks at his hand, then at his wrist, slightly stunned by what has just occurred.
ReplyDeleteAfter a short moment, Blendin looks to Jorana. "Thank you. Your kindness is overwhelming."
A glint of a tear is visible, but Blendin retrains the tear and it soon disappears.
After a quick embrace of Jorana (if allowed), Blendin waits for Xisco's song to come to an end and tells him its time to go.
----------------------------------------------
ooc: SWEET!
where are you guys going next?
ReplyDeleteTime to visit Preslim.
ReplyDeleteXisco prayer-tune is short; he is ready to depart when Blendin re-enters the main sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteTooly looks over the cannon very, very thoroughly, and equally dubiously. "I dunno about these. That price'd get a real bronze cannon on Mt. Ore--or Deepsky. I don't know that we need more cannon right now if they're not top-notch, but it's up to you, skipper. We got by in the ol' gasbag with just the one, I think we could wait 'til we get to Mt. Ore if we wanted to."
ReplyDelete--------------
OOC: Was the Scottish as painful to write as it was to read? That's half the reason my Dwarfish accent is more redneck than Scottish. That and I like violating stereotypes, even fictional ones.
Dwarven cannon take 2 crew and regular cannon 3, right? It doesn't say anywhere about regular cannon that I can find, but it does about dwarven cannon. I assume it's something to do with winches and pulleys that help load or something.
Anyway, we have 7 crew counting the doc, so we could only man 3 cannon with someone piloting if they were all dwarven, and we can only shoot 2 per side anyway. Not much point in buying both guns unless we plan to sell one on Bridgeways or Canopy at a profit, or trade in the wood-and-rope one.
Tooly's new toy is a Heavy Weapon itself, though very short-ranged, by the way.
We should get the lead shot (that's the armor-piercing kind, right?) and the grape, at least. And we should get at least two bundles of bolts.
ooc: nope. I present http://www.whoohoo.co.uk/scottish-translator.asp which I actually made more legible. Thanks internet!
ReplyDeleteAll cannon require a crew of two, except for pintle guns which can be fired with only 1, but need 2 to load normally.
Lead has twice the penetration of stone shot. More updatin later, but feel free to jump in.
“Weel, yoo're nae in Moont Air, ur ye? whit will it be, Ah hae other customers interested in mah goods.”
ReplyDeleteooc: I’m glad you like the dwarven dialect of common. Think of it like a puzzle! We all love puzzles, right?!
I’m going to say that the lead shot is purchased then, as well as the grape and 2 score bolts. Total cost: 348 divided up between you; 87 apiece.
============
The priestesses wish you fair winds, and then return to their prayers.
The exterior of the alchemist guildhall is painted with various runes and symbols. The paint is magefire, a rather ubiquitous site in shadowhaven, but has been tinted to be any number of colors. It’s rather garish, but it is also their biggest claim to fame of the past few years, and the reason they were tossed from the Hollow. It is given freely to the city in exchange for rent, to fuel ‘torches,’ and is quite safe unlike pitch or tallow.
Preslim is summoned by a young apprentice. He is shorter than most drakin, only slightly taller than Blendin, and with a particularly shriveled snout. He wears heavy robes that give him bulk and make him look ponderous as he walks. “Yes, human, yes, lizardling? Out with it! Be quick about it, and make it worth my time. I don’t have much left you know, and my services are not cheap. If you need potions, see one of the youngsters and leave this old man be. But I imagine you came for something more than that. A scroll, maybe an alloy or element with special properties? Or perhaps a poison, eh? You two look the type for poisons…”
"I'm not quite sure how to take that last comment of yours, but no, what I am looking for is information."
ReplyDelete"Xisco, would you mind excusing us for a moment."
When Xisco has appeared to leave earshot, Blendin turns to the drakin, "What can you tell me about wildling reproduction?"
While Xisco is standing some distance away, he can hear the conversation quite clearly (notice 10).
ReplyDeletePreslim looks at Blendin with a raised brow. “Wildlings are forged, not born, young fellow. Enjoy it; I had 37 brothers and sisters and none of them amounted to anything aside from me. Imagine my mother’s disappointment. If that is all you came to discuss I fear I cannot be of service. Good day.” The drakin turns to leave.
Both Xisco and Blendin feel that the drakin is withholding something from them.
Blendin yells after him, and pulls out his potion. "I can pay."
ReplyDeleteTooly is fine with buying the cannon (since it'll bring us to 3), but would be equally happy waiting to buy some real metal tubes on Mt. Ore, so he defers to Garner and his persuasive abilities.
ReplyDeleteI think we should hold off until we can get high quality cannons that aren't priced so high due to scarcity.
ReplyDeleteSigurd seems to know that this sale isn’t going to happen, and tallies up the cost of the other goods, wishing you well as his boy is sent along to deliver your goods. You return to the ship to find Taz, Wung, and one of the most bedraggled looking humans you’ve ever met. He is of indeterminate middle age, stooped, and has ragged, unkempt brown hair with wild eyes over sunken cheeks. He wears only a subligaculum of sailcloth and hide, and is barefoot. He has a small woven bag slung over his shoulder that dangles various small glass vials, bits of bone and wood with stoppers in them.
ReplyDeleteTaz straightens, and brings his arm across his uniformed chest in a formal salute. “Sir, Master engineer. We are reporting for duty. You remember Wung of course,” Wung grunts an orcish greeting that seems warm enough (‘My axe thirsts at the sight of you’), “and this is the man I was telling you about. His name is,”
“Galen, sirs, but call me Medicus. Everyone calls me that eventually.” He offers a hand to you, which is rather grimy. “Glad I can be of service, I was tiring of this island anyway. Have you anything to eat?” Fang looks at you in concern with a tilted head and raised ear.
===========
“Now see here, wildling, I don’t have time to…” his voice drops out, as he turns and sees the bottle. “By the Dragons! Where did you find such a foul thing?” He rushes forward, and speaks to you in a low voice. “Boy, you do not understand what it is you hold. It is dangerous beyond measure! Some of my order would kill to possess it. Both of you, you must come inside quickly. We will talk, but put that cursed thing away.” He ushers you into the building, and Xisco as well.
You wind through a series of corridors with Preslim leading. He takes you past room after room, carefully keeping watch as you dart through the hallways. You arrive at a small chamber, well appointed with various tools of his trade: beakers and mixing bowls, powders in bone bowls, open books and stacks of papers, various metal devices that you can only begin to guess at their purpose. He directs you to a rough-hewn table, and seats himself at one end.
“Now, show me that bottle. I would see it before I say more. Hmm.” The drakin nods thoughtfully, as if deciding what to say next. “You want to know about reproduction. Fine. I fear I did not lie to you earlier. It is impossible.
“Believe me, for years I worked on the problem in this very room. Years. But like a great many things, it is beyond my art. Others will not give up the pursuit, and continue in vain. They dabble in things not unlike that bottle there until it consumes and twists them.
“I deduce that you know of my messages. That little birdling courier told you, hmm? You lot are always talking, like my people, where others will not hear. No matter.
“There is a wizard I know, who continued the pursuit, but has now gone to far. I am convinced that when he fails, it will lead to ruin not just for him, but for many of those still at home on Dragon’s Spine. I tried to convince him he had crossed the line into arts that should not be tampered with, but he will not listen. That is why I have put a stop to it. I informed the Council of what he was doing not 2 days ago. It is not a matter to concern yourself over any more, they will see to it.” Preslim holds out his hand, waiting to receive the bottle.
Xisco’s gambler’s eye tells him there is some kind of bluff going on here, but he isn’t sure what. Blendin too feels that he is not being told the truth, and remembers that the original letter that was received by Halcon contained parts of formulas. He sees similar formulas in an open book on a stand nearby, and doesn’t understand why a letter of warning would contain formulas. (really good notice rolls guys)
Xisco stays Blendin's hand as he starts react to the outstretched arm, "Hold now, friend. I understand wanting to keep a few secrets, and all, but it's not everyday that you get offered this," indicating the potion. "To get this will require a more honest telling; if you can't give such a telling, then we'll leave some cogs for your time and be on our way." (Persuade 6, Bennie 9).
ReplyDelete"No worries Xisco, I can tell I'm being lied to, but thank you. Preslim, I don't pay for lies. How about you start by explaining the arts in which you and Halcon are working."
ReplyDeletePreslim looks at you both carefully, weighing his thoughts (9 vs. 14). “I’m sorry. I cannot help you. But I must be clear. Halcon and I were never in league. And his twisted experiments are beyond what anyone could accept. Why do you think he left Heartland, or later the University?
ReplyDelete“He worked at the Forge years ago. Long before I was hatched. It broke him, though few knew it at the time. He came here, and began teaching at the University. I met him there. He is deeply troubled. He is haunted by the memories of what he has done, and thinks saving your kind,” he points at Blendin “will right his mistakes. He is deadly wrong and must be stopped.” Preslim stands, and folds his arms in a determined fashion. “Keep your bottle and your coin, if you must, but I will say no more on the subject. Good day.”
Blendin looks to Xisco. "Alright, I guess I'm ready to go."
ReplyDeleteAs he turns to walk out, Blendin says, "Maybe the Council alchemists can sift their way through those formulas and explain how Preslim is actually assisting Halcon."
ooc: it seems that things are wrapping up in shadowhaven. If you have other actions you wish to take before departure, go ahead and drop them here and I'll resolve them as needed, but otherwise I'll put you in route to Mystery Island w/ its Forbidden Door this evening.
ReplyDeleteOh, benny contest! Name the island - extra goodies if its named in character.
Does Preslim not react to Blendin's statement?
ReplyDeleteohhhh, I thought that was after you walked out. I need to read more carefully it seems.
ReplyDeletePreslim calls after you, "As I said, I've already informed the council of my involvement. Do what you must, but ask yourself 'who will they believe'? A wildling still wet from the forge, or a respected member of this guild?"
ooc: I hate not being big enough or stupid enough to just bash his head in. ;)
ReplyDeleteThese dangerous arts of which Preslim speaks, would this mean anything to Blendin in character? Are there laws in Shadowhaven regarding the use of such arts? Just trying to figure out what Blendin's next move might be (before getting his @$$ off this island).
"Afraid not, Mr. Medicus. We don't carry much in the way of stores and catch as we go. I imagine you could find some honeyed skyler skewers from any number of places here by the docks. There is a vendor I particularly like who sells outside Mott the Barber's shop." Gardner glowers at Taz. "Go ahead and stow your things gentleman, then we'll see what preparations need to be made."
ReplyDeleteooc: Generally speaking people are pretty nervous about necromancy and other 'dark' magics. Most magic is tolerated and in many cases required for survival. Death magic, demon summoning or interaction with any of the dark gods (Voiders, undead priests, etc.) is highly dangerous in a populated place like shadowhaven, and thus forbidden. In terms of specific regulations, I'd say wizards are expected to police themselves for the most part (that's part of why they congregate in universities), but if the council sees something as a threat to public safety or more importantly trade, they will step in to rectify a situation.
ReplyDeleteAlso remember the council is a civic entity, but its leadership consists largely of members of a religious order. There's alot of overlap in the skies, and its hard to draw clear lines. Dark arts therefore are not something specific, so much as an indication of concern about the types of magic being preformed.
Medicus totters over to the food vendor, and at 'Taz's' suggestion (and coin), is shorn to a short cropped hairdo. He comes back looking vaguely more human that before, but still gaunt. Taz shrugs apologetically, before adding under his breath, "better than a boat with no surgeon at all"
Tooly enthusiastically helps stow the new shot for the cannon and most of the crossbow bolts, but takes a pair of bolts to his cabin, where he places them with the bronze he purchased. He seems very eager to get underway, though whether it's because he's leaving Shadowhaven or going back to the island is unclear.
ReplyDelete"So, skipper? What's the plan after we've looted Burning Bloom Island? Bloomburn Island? Anyway, we could sell that door for a bundle on Bridgeways and get your sails. Maybe you could see some of your childhood chums, too. Then we could pick up a load of lumber from our friends in Timber and trade it for some real guns and hold work on Mt. Ore. Assuming the basement's not full of enough loot to make us all rich, of course, eh? Eh?"
-----------------
OOC: Tooly was struck by the rather eerie flowers, but whenever discussing the island, he'll throw out other names like Voiderbane Island and, for the tower, Dragon's Dong and Tooly's Tool just to see how the others react.
Xisco and Blendin arrive at the docks. Plans are made to depart, and the crew reviews last minute preparations. The soldiers guarding your ship make their way to a dingy, and begin sailing back to their vessel.
ReplyDeleteooc: alright, so, I think this time I will go ahead and bump forward tonight, but wanted to give you one last chance to do something here. I assume the destination is Mystery Island still.
That will take 2 weeks (sick boating rolls, again). I've got activities from Xisco and Tooly for the trip, otherwise lemme know what you're doing.
As the Ollie sets sail, Tooly, usually somewhat excited by the start of a new voyage, seems more boisterous than usual, humming and occasionally singing parts of a jaunty song and drumming the railing, singing backup parts in a falsetto:
ReplyDelete'Cause if you think you need some money,
well you...can't have mine,
And if you want some conversation,
try a...pick-up line,
But if you think you need some lovin'...
(Oooooooh)
That's fine!
The dwarf appears to have forgotten much of the song, though, because he sings the last half in nonsense syllables.
thread closing. New one opening in a few.
ReplyDelete"Hey Tooly, you're looking forward to our visit to Molten Rock it seems."
ReplyDelete
