117th Day, 0430 Ship Time, Uncharted Island

With the Grandee adrift, and weapons at the ready, the Swoose makes its way towards the rock formation.

The forest breaks open abruptly, giving way to the dark grey stone of the tower. The rock tower is some 50 meters high, assuming the trees here are roughly 20m tall. Although it is obscured by the forest, the tower has a rough 20-meter square base that tapers and twists a quarter turn clockwise to end in a flat top, 15 meters on a side. In theory, the Swoose would have plenty of room to come to rest atop it; Gardner notes however the winds here near the edge of the island are rougher than those at the center. He is concerned that maneuvering may be more difficult, but sees few other landing sites.

A series of winding switchbacks and pathways carved in the stone lead to the top of the tower. These look as if they were once well traveled, and give you reason to believe that this formation is in fact a ruin and not a natural phenomenon. You see a pair of archways on the sides of the ruined tower, about halfway from the top.

As you make a high, wide circle above (if you need a distance, we’ll call it 200m), you make out two figures lying supine atop the tower. They are stretched out with their arms above their heads, suggesting they are bound both and staked hand and foot, and fully exposed to the Glow. Blendin and Clovis see no evidence of the Voiders, however you can all smell woodsmoke. You doubt the two bound men you now view were the ones behind it.

Jay’s excellent vision sees movement near the base of the tower, some 30 meters away in the woods, clearly made by something other than the wind.

Gardner’s vision pierces through the leaves. He makes out a handful of glowing eyes of blinded. They do not seem to notice the Swoose directly, but are walking along a shielded path back towards the tower. You also see a figure in black robes, leading the procession towards the tower, followed by a pirate in leathers. There is something else with them.

=========
ooc: I thought you should see these notice rolls I did behind the screen for “details”. Jay = 13. Gardner = 22. Blendin = 10. Clovis = 4. The multiple ace madness of notice checks – bet you’re glad I got those out of the way before the next battle.

Boating roll of 15.

  1. OOC: What kind of cannon ammo do we have? Stone, lead, or iron solids, explosive, etc? I assume we don't have chain, and we obviously have grapeshot.

    ReplyDelete
  2. you have 6 rounds of stone solid ball, and 5 loads of grape remaining.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Clovis eyes the figures on the tower. "Looks easy enough. But then, I didn't expect the Blinded to be able to jump like that. What do you guys think? Can we get 'em? My healer's dead, so we don't want to get hurt, now. Maybe we could use the Grandee as a decoy, or use the Swoose to cover while the Grandee picks them up. It needs work to move, though...they'll be mad by then. Damn."

    ----------------------
OOC: Dang, no bombarding the bastards from up high.

    ReplyDelete
  4. say we try and get them on board and be away before they get to the top of the tower. Hopefully it'll take them a while to climb those switchbacks."
    ------------------------
Gardner will wait a few moments for other suggestions or ojbections and then start maneuvering the Swoose in for a landing atop the tower. If its feasible to deploy and retract the side sails before landing for the extra handling bonus, we should do that. If its not, just go without. unmodified boating rolls 5, 7, 21. If I'm going to fail a boating roll I'll spend a bennie to reroll.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Clovis stands by the cannon, musket ready. "Doubt the blinder cannon's much good, here..." He looks up. "Moira, you be ready to cut your buddies loose. Me and the little guy will cover you." He looks at Jay, but doesn't say anything.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Jay suggests lowering him down to cut the captives free; he'll pull some skyler nets with him to load up them up for a quick getaway.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Moira gets a hatchet from the stores locker, and moves to the rail next to Jay, looking determined. "Uh, Jay, is it? So, in the interest of honesty, the last time I saw one of your kind, I shot him. He didn't seem to notice, of course. I hope that there's no hard feelings, and I'll try to be a bit more careful with my shots if you do the same with those swords of yours." She slings the blunderbuss on her back, and checks the pistol's load before returning it to her belt.

  8. Gardner grits his teeth. The Swoose lands hard, but softer than he feared. She skids slightly before steadying at one end of the tower. Moira’s lack of “void-legs” means she’s not ready for the landing, and ends up flopping onto her belly with an ‘oof!’ (failed her AG check)

The voiders must have seen you landing. You hear the sounds of the blinded below, as well as the priest chanting in an unknown tongue. By the sound of things they have already begun their ascent, but their exact position is difficult to determine from your current vantage point. Those on the Swoose will be unable to see those ascending the tower until they reach the last switchback. Those actually on the ruin will have even less time to react.

The two bound men are shouting for help. They appear sickly from their ordeal, but you do not believe Madness has claimed them yet. You see evidence of at least three other binding sites, although those ropes have been cut, or broken.

Jay throws the nets over the side in preparation to scramble down. Tooly stands ready by the cannon, although he fears anyone between him and the pathway his foes will most likely ascend will be in the path of his grapeshot. Blendin is nearby, musket shouldered and on the rail.

ooc: The Great Rescue. Switching to Combat action sequences. JWW will again control Moira.

See the map above for a side-view layout. From above, the top of the tower is an 8” square. The ground at the top of the tower is broken, providing light cover but also slowing your pace by 1. The Swoose is settled along one side, taking up roughly half the square The net is easy to climb, so add a +1 to your rolls. A 4 is a success as always.

The two sailors are staked out, hands and feet, 3” from the ships edge, and 1” from the path down. Their hands and feet are also bound together. Cutting them free of the stakes is a trivial affair (+2 to your fighting roll to hit, do 4 damage to cut the rope). The stakes are too far apart to cut more than 1 per round. Alternatively, they can be shot by firing at -6 (small target).

The bindings around their limbs themselves are more difficult to cut without injuring them. Best option is to untie them, an Agility roll at -4 or boating roll at -2, your choice. If their feet are bound, max pace is 1”; if their hands are bound, climb is at -3. You can also toss them in the nets, and hope they don’t fall out as per Jay’s idea, of course. These are by no means the only options, - I’m just trying to lay a few things out to give you a feel for the types of options that exist. I’m sure you’ll find others.
Jay is gaining a benny for his idea to use the nets, which I think is classy. Tooly is getting one for his line about Nitinol sphincters – also classy. Plus, I feel like you might need them.

Combat Round 1. Take your turn in any order – the cards is for book-keeping until you can see them again.

  9. OOC: Some questions about the lay of the land. I gather the Swoose and anyone aboard her is 4-5" from the edge where the path reaches the top of the tower, just beyond the prisoners. The path, then must be another inch beyond the edge, essentially. So if a pirate were on the path in a position where only his head and shoulders were exposed, the range would be 5-6"?
Also, how many paths reach the top? One on each side? And did they appear connected?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jay will move forward and attempt to cut loose the first prisoner (Fighting 6, +2; damage 8).

He barks at the screaming prisoners "Shut-up, morons! You want to be rescued, turned, or killed? Keep screaming and I can't promise the first...".

    ReplyDelete
  11. Blendin takes aim and fires at one of the ropes binding the men.

    ---------------------------------------------
    Shooting: 7+2+1-6=4

    ReplyDelete
  12. Gardner trades Moira his pistol for her musket. Gardner is going to overcharge the musket and aim at the path where the voiders will come up. Fang sits at the edge of the ship watching the action. Moira scrambles down the side of the ship (climb 6), moves to the first sailor and tries to untie his hands (agility 1).
    --------------------
Can Moira use her lockpick skill to untie the ropes? I realize its a stretch, but maye it helps her with deft finger manipulation.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Clovis holds his musket in his left hand and pulls one of the stun bombs from his belt with his right, giving it a little bounce in his palm as if checking the weight, readying it to throw.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The prisoners quiet as Jay cuts the rope holding Ceran’s wrists to their stake, and Blendin shoots the rope holding his ankles. He sits up slowly, dazed and stiff. His ankles and wrists are still tied together tightly. Moira goes to work on the rope binding his hands, but it appears to be slow going.

You hear a howl from down the hill, and the scrabbling of rock. You also note a small cookfire near one edge of the tower, still smoldering.

Suddenly, you hear peals of insane laughter all around you, and the glow about you feels heavy to the point of being painful. Clovis and Blendin stagger under the weight of it. (Stun attack. Both are shaken.)

    =========
    ooc: The Great Rescue continues.

Bphage, you gather correctly. That is the correct range. There is one path per side, but the one closest to the Swoose appears crumbled and impassable. There does not appear to be any exterior connection between the paths, but there are archways that go into the sides of the tower on opposite sides.

Bphage, you have control of the two “prisoners.” They both have a d6 in agility and boating, and are at -2 for fatigue. While staked, they can do nothing. Even when unstaked, while hands are bound, all attempts to untie themselves are at an additional -2, and can move at a pace of 1” per round with bound feet. Remember, these are not Wild Cards, and thus do not get a Wild Die.

JWW, I assume you mean you’re overloading the blunderbuss? I’ll allow Moira to use her lockpick tools (and skill) at a -3.

    Combat Round 2.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jay steps up to Ceran and strikes at the rope holding his hands to the stake (Fighting 15, +2; damage 16).

    ReplyDelete
  16. sam, Ceran is tied up, but no longer staked (you cut that rope last turn). Unless you tell me otherwise, you just cut Brand's wrist-to-stake line.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Right, sorry; apparently I mistype just like I misspeak...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Clovis shakes like a dog coming in out of the wet, his face going from stunned to angry. He mutters under his breath and throws his stun bomb just over the edge where the path meets the side with the fire.
Ceran tries to untie his feet with his bound hands and only succeeds in chafing himself. If anything, the ropes are tighter, now. (Agility roll: 1 without all the negative mods. Lack of a wild die sucks).
    --------------
OOC : Spirit roll: 8 on wild die, which is a raise and means I get to act, right? My spirit die was a 3.
Clovis's throwing target is basically the path or rock just downslope from the edge, where an unseen enemy would be. Not a hard target, and it's short range for a grenade (5"), so provided he gets at least +2 for the area target, he should hit.
If he needs a Weird Science roll to arm it (last turn), it was a natural 4.
    Throwing: 4-2+?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Moira pulls a small blade from her lockpicking kit and goes to work on Ceran's wrist ties (lockpicking 3+4-3=4). Gardner continues to wait for a target to appear. Fang licks the net.
    ------------------------------
Yes, I meant the blunderbuss, with the musket set out beside him ready to use.

    ReplyDelete
  20. OOC: I think to avoid confusion we should note that in game terms a "musket" is a rifle-sized musket, while a musket-pistol is simply a "pistol."

    ReplyDelete
  21. Brand begins to stir as well. “Get me legs, boys, be quick about it! The Cap’n, Mr. Bryant and Girg, they’ve all gone Mad. Oy, is that you, Moira? Ha! We thought you dead for sure, you crazy bitch!” She smiles at him, but says nothing as she cuts Ceran’s hands free.

Tooly’s bag sails over the side, and you heard a whump and see an indirect flash of blue light.

  25. Ceran determinedly tries to untie his feet again with his freed hands, but seems to be too rattled to deal with the bizarre knots (Ag: 4-2-4=crap). Brand sits up, looking dazed, and picks ineffectually at his own ankle ties (another 4).
Clovis shoulders his musket, ready for an enemy to appear, eyes darting around the edges where a Blinded might appear at any moment.

    ------------------
OOC: Clovis is holding his action, musket ready. If a Notice roll might be relevant, it was a 5.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jay quickly glares at the wilding that has taken three shots at him today, then takes a swing at the rope holding Brand's feet to the stake (Fighting 3, 1 on Trait die, +2; Bennie 5, +2; damage 12).
    ---------
Huh, I forgot to roll the raises into the damage vs. the rope, previously. That other rope really got it good...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Blendin reloads and holds his fire, searching the edge for enemies.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Moira starts to work on Ceran's feet bindings (lockpick 4+4-3=5). "You're right, coming back for you was crazy, Ceran."

Gardner holds his fire, waiting for an enemy to appear.
    ----------------------------
OOC: I haven't been rolling a wild die for Moira. Is that correct? Also, for clarification, Gardner has the blunderbus in hand, Moira's musket (rifle) laid out for a second shot, and Moira had Gardner's pistol.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Again, it feels as if the glow reaches into your mind, filling your head with echoes of insane laughter. Blendin shakes it off, but Tooly stumbles (stun attack. Shaken.)

Moira’s knife cuts the bonds holding Ceran’s feet. As she finishes, she looks over and says, “Girg?!” You all see what she’s referring to: eight feet of roaring, black-brown fur-covered, dead running goblin rager comes into view, his legs invisible by the slope. Froth comes from his mouth – it appears whoever Girg was is not there anymore.

From the corner of your eye, three blinded jump into view, landing at the edge near the firepit, (5” from Jay/Brand and 3” from Moira/Ceran). Their glowing eyes and ashen skin are hardly as frightening as they once appeared, but their malice is palpable.

    =========
ooc: The Great Rescue. Combat, Round 4.

JWW, Moira is a Wild Card, and has a musket pistol. My email to you was incorrect. Apologies. I’ll assume that you have your pistol on the rail, blunderbuss in hand.

I took a liberty by letting the Blinded jump turn order. I thought it’d give Blendin a choice to make like the rest of you.

  30. current benny count:

    Blendin - 1
    Clovis - 2

    Gardner - 4
    Moira - 2

  31. Blendin takes a shot at Girg. Shooting: 10+1=11

    ReplyDelete
  32. result of email from Jay:

Jay slings Brand over his shoulder, and moves to the net, dropping him into the netting and hoping the mesh will hold his weight. He fires a thorn with a flick of his wrist at the Rager, but it goes well wide of the massive brute.

Blendin's careful shot disappears in the dense fur covering the rager. The monstrous creature tips forward and slides to a stop.

ooc: Blendin hits with a raise. 18 damage. Incapped.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Clovis blinks, recovering from the stun. He blinks at the fallen rager. "Nice shot!"
Ceran scrambles to his feet and over to the net.

    ----------------
OOC: Spirit roll: 5. Since I didn't get a raise, Clovis can't do anything else this turn, right?
I assume it takes a turn to climb the net, so Ceran will have to do that next turn.
If I'm wrong about either of these things, let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Clovis can spend a bennie to act this turn if you wish. Climbing takes an action, and since Ceran is prone, yes, it'll take a turn (he's too far away once he stands up to do both) I assume he's at the bottom of the net.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gardner shoots the blunderbus at Olic (shooting 8 unmodified by range or aim). Moira fires at Bryant, whispering "sorry, old friend" under her breath (shooting 5 unmodified). Then she runs for the net and begins climbing if she has movement left (climb 6). Fang snarls at the new arrivals (holding action until an enemy tries to board).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Clovis grins a bit wildly, swinging the cannon a few more degrees to the side until it aligns with the middle Blinded. Bellowing something that may or may not be "metal moneyshot," he fires.

    --------------------
OOC: Spent a benny to act, and another on the shooting roll to get 7-2=5. (Assuming -2 MAP. Original roll was 5.)
By my calculations, everyone is now either on the Swoose or at the base of the net, and thus safely out of the line of fire. If this is wrong, ignore the above, and I'll save both my bennies.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gardner levels the barrel on the former captain, and it belches fire and death. Olic falls in the firepit showering sparks and cloud of ash, and doesn’t move.(hit, with raise. 16 damage. Incapped) Moira’s shot grazes the former mate, but does not harm him (6 damage. No effect)

    =========
ooc: The Great Rescue. Combat, Round 5. Nice draw guys!

Bphage, the cannon angle is the issue – they are to the stern and out of its swivel firing arc. Unfortunately, as much as I want the phrase “metal moneyshot” to be part of the cannon canon, I’m going to have to go with your first post.

Jay, bottom of net. 10 of Spades.

Blendin, on Swoose. 10 of Hearts.

Gardner (on Swoose), Moira (bottom of net), and Fang (ACTION HELD). 10 of Clubs.

Clovis, on Swoose. Prisoners. 9 of Diamonds.
    Ceran, sailor. Bottom of net.
Brand, sailor. Bound, hand and foot. Prone, in net.

PIRATE(S), position unknown. 8 of Diamonds.

VOIDER PRIEST, position unknown. 4 of Clubs.

BLINDED, 6” from Swoose net, to stern. 2 of Spades.
    Bryant, former mate, wooden mallet
    Half-naked one, rib blade

    INCAPPED
    Girg, Rager, 4” from top.
    Olic, former captain, lead sword

    ReplyDelete
  38. Blendin reloads and takes a shot at Bryant.

Shooting: 4+1=5 [spent bennie to reroll]

    ReplyDelete
  39. 5-2=3. MAP for the reload. shot misses - man Blendin, you've had some bad luck shooting over the course of things.

    ReplyDelete
  40. for the last several battles, I have been allowed to reload and shoot within a single round, as each is allowed two actions, correct? I guess I need clarification. I should also stop using the dnd dice roller, me thinks.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Gritting his teeth at his inability to clear the tower with a load of grapeshot, Clovis makes do with a shot at the shirtless Blinded.

Ceran attempts to climb up to the Swoose, having some difficulty (rolled a 2 on d6, don't know what his climbing skill is).

    -----------------
OOC: Curses! I thought the side with the campfire was parallel to the Swoose. Ah, well.

It seems Clovis has a knack for shooting Blinded. It must be the glowing eyes--they make good aiming points. Shooting: 7, damage: 13.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jay fires a thorn at Bryant (Shooting 2, MAP), draws his Ironwood and steps forward.

"Pull in the net and start getting the ship off the ground!"
    -----------
Jay moves forward 1 to 2" to between the Blinded and the net.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Moira climbs up the netting to the deck (Climb 5) , and then tries to haul the net up behind her (Strength 7! with an ace) (Not sure if MAP applies here if the climb isn't considered part of her base pace for the turn, I didn't include it if it does). Gardner moves to help Moira haul up the net and Brand (Strength 5 or Boating 7). Fang continues to hold his action.

    ReplyDelete
  44. ooc: LR, I've been deducting the MAP from your shooting rolls all along - this is the first time its been relevant.

Everyone can move up to pace and perform 1 action at no penalty, and can have as many additional (different) actions as they please. Each added action adds a multiple action penalty (MAP) of -2. This is cumulative, so if I did 4 actions in a turn, they'd all be at a -8. Thus, you're always "allowed" to try to take an action, it just gets harder the more you do.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Clovis’ aim is true, and the blinded drops with a wheeze. Ceran gets tangled in the net, unable to climb aboard. Jay considers briefly that the thorns on his hide have never been as effective as he’d been led to believe before his bonding, and moves between the ship and the remaining blinded. Moira boards the Swoose, but the weight of the two men in the net is too much for her to lift. With Gardner’s help on the wench, the net begins to ascend. The two men look concerned about their predicament, but say nothing.

A bald pirate in hide armor comes into view. He throws a bone dagger at Jay, which sails by hardly noticed.

You hear a voice from below, ordering “TAKE THE SHIP, FOR THE GLORY OF OUR GOD!” This voice echoes in the ears of those near the net. Gardner and Moira both buckle under the weight of his voice. (Stun Attack)

The blinded’s empty sockets look past Jay, and he leaps aboard the ship next to Gardner. Fang moves to intercede, but is too slow (lost the interrupt roll). The mallet swings forward at Gardner, and catches him square in the back. The old man staggers under the blow (hit with raise, 17! Damage, 3 wounds. Ow.) Fang moves to defend his master, and tackles the blinded with his teeth gnawing its throat (hit, 14 damage, incapped. Took the liberty to have Fang act to repel boarders – if you have a different action you wish him to take, feel free to retcon.).

The pirate, draws his sword and a dagger, and takes up a defensive stance. “Give up, fools! Asesh will show you the beauty of the Void! The Glow embraces us all!”

OOC: ...Unless Blendin incaps the pirate first. Spent a benny, got an ace. Shooting 12-2=10 Damage (with extra d6): 11

JWW: Remember you can reroll soak rolls by spending extra bennies. Since you have so many left.

  49. OOC: I told you I'm not looking it up, I just wanted to be sure you hadn't forgotten or anything. I guess he's a pretty high-level priest, then. Well, he'll be alone soon.

  50. Soak rolls: 3 reroll w/ benny, 5. 2 bennies spent. So I have 2 wounds left.

  51. Spirit rolls: Moira 2, Gardner 5 + spending a benny to act this turn. 1 benny remaining. Gardner's going to wait to act until after Jay to see if he makes it on board the ship this turn.

  52. Blendin curses his poor shooting, reloads and takes a shot at the pirate. [Shooting: 7+1-2(map)=6] "That's what Alpha thinks of your Asesh!"

  53. The two musket balls rip through the pilot, who falls with a cry to his master for help. That help does not appear to be coming, and you no longer hear the shouts from the priest.

Jay, you're up. Pirate is incapped.

  54. OOC: He could have been the pilot of the Voider ship, too, right? The Blinded sure weren't. Though they might not have done much worse.

  55. good point. He's both. For defending the honor of the GM, you get a benny.

  56. Arg. Thought I posted this morning, but Blogger ate the post...
Jay, seeing the pirate before him drop, and the Blinded jumping over and past him, shrugs, sheathes his swords, moves onto the side of the ship, and grabs the top of the net.

  57. "Let's go. Haul 'em up. And somebody pick up my spine if you see it." Gardner begins to lift off (Boating 5+2-2=5 + any handling or other modifiers)

  58. Clovis keeps watch by the cannon, musket in hand, hoping the priest will show himself.
"I say we haul 'em in and come back to finish the priest. I don't want to leave him to convert the next shipload of sailors who find this place."
After a pause, he adds, "Besides, there might be some good salvage in that ruin. It's big and old."
