Character Backgrounds

Everyone's gotten me what I need. Thanks folks!

I'm finishing up the first post of the game and should have something up there for you midday my-time. In the meantime (or after, for that matter) its probably useful for each of you to post a brief character background in terms of the other players. It can, of course, be what you sent me - but I imagine there are things in your character's histories you might like to keep under wraps. Assume that each of you have known and sailed with each other for at least a year, although some of you clearly have been aboard longer than others.

Kickoff in a few hours.

  1. Jay was on the ship when you got there. For some reason he occupies the largest cabin on the ship; no one has seen fit to inform the ex-Oakthorn that he should move. Not that anyone would want the room anyway, with its large, uncovered bay windows and growing plants (creepily named Zeus, Apollo, and Gipper).

Jay has never spoken of his youth or service on Heartland. What you have been able to glean is that Jay has worked with many different companies over the years. Neither talk about the particulars, but he was working for another employer when he and Greenbottom met, back when Greenbottom captained the Swoose. Soon after meeting, Jay was working for Greenbottom, and has been ever since. (Some rumors place Jay at various important events in Greenbottom's rise, either in the foreground or background; another rumor has it that the last person to ask Jay about these events barely escaped with his life (a second version of that rumor has that person burning in the Flaming Skies)).

Jay doesn't like you; the only person you think he actually likes is Greenbottom. You're not quite sure that Jay would trust you with his life, and you get the distinct feeling that he would sell you out, if the price were right. However, he follows the captain's orders and mostly stays out of your way.

  2. Clovis “Tooly” Oresmith
Clovis, like most dwarves, was born a long time ago on Deepsky. After training to become an Engineer for several decades, he left Deepsky for Shadowhaven, hoping to improve the technology of the humans there and, not incidentally, become very rich. The fact that he seems to prefer human women may have had something to do with it, too. He has been on Shadowhaven for at least 20 years, fixing things for a living but never striking it rich with his inventions.
As anyone with any knowledge of the Trade Council on Shadowhaven—or anyone who talks to Clovis when he’s drinking—knows, Clovis’ best attempt to become rich hit a major snag when the “revolutionary” repeating musket he was demonstrating exploded in front of several Trade Council officials, destroying Clovis’ left eye and his reputation as an inventor. Greenbottom hired Clovis for his repair skills, but put him on the Swoose where his occasional innovations aren’t too much of a risk.
On the most recent voyage, the crew awoke one morning to find Clovis, who was on watch, had dismantled the entire steam engine that kept the gas bag inflated. He said he had a way to increase its efficiency by at least 10%, but the world may never know, since the Swoose was hit by a storm before he could reassemble it, and the loose parts—most of the engine—were all lost overboard. Clovis kept the bag mostly inflated by cobbling together a substitute machine, but it, too, stopped running just before the ship reached port. He has a deep disdain for non-ironclad ships, and an even deeper one for “paper balloons” like the one he is assigned to. During the stand-down while the ship was being repaired, Clovis went to a lot of trouble to make a powerful flare cannon for the ship, since he feels it is not fast or tough enough to outrun or outfight most hazards in the Void.
When not helping fix the ship, he can usually be found drinking in a dockside tavern, where he is always accompanied by a young, slim, attractive human woman, but never the same one more than a few times. The women don’t seem to be professionals, but they are usually dressed in worn or inexpensive clothing and it’s unclear if they’re being paid or if Clovis is more of a ladies’ man than he has any right to be. He has a tendency when he’s drinking to lament his short stature (compared to humans), but inevitably follows such diatribes with a complaint about how uncomfortable it is to have his manhood dragging on the ground, so it’s hard to tell if he’s serious. It might explain the women, though.

  3. Blendin is my name and stealth is my game. I'm a chameleon wildling with 5 years from the forge and 13 years from birth under my belt. I am not a pretty thing to look at. I've only been on the ship for a year. Little of my life is known to others, but I am on the run (but then again, what wildling isn't). My most notable characteristics are the way I sand down my horns every morning and I am rarely seen without a very large musket at my side. I tend to dress in plain clothes, but there may have been times I've been seen (especially when ported at shadowhaven) sporting a nice looking organge cloak. As far as Greenbottom is concerned, I am a hired gund with a great shot and steady hands. I've got a gentle demeanor with most, though my demeanor cools in the presence of Jay.

  4. Gardner Drawlight

Gardner is an aging human with grey hair and weathered skin. Though he's still spry for his age, he gets winded easily and spends more time sitting than most sailors in the Skies. Still, most respect his knowledge and abilities as a sailor.

He wears his hair cut very short, no facial hair, and dresses very plainly. He carries a dagger and pistol at his side. Fang, Gardner's large brown Orcish Warhound, is his constant companion. Fang is generally friendly to those he knows, but when voices are raised or he senses menacing intent he growls and exposes his oversized incisors.

Gardner has rather Spartan tastes. He eats little and rarely drinks alcohol. he plays cards, but rarely for money and always makes the minimum bet when playing for money.

He is a meticulous and precise sailor, and is very mindful and particular about cargo and gear being stowed properly, ship's time being kept accurately, rigging being kept neat, decks being kept clear, and provisions being rationed carefully.
